a tuning box is also good way to go and wont flag a Td1 with Audi.
Not quite as simple as that. The act of tuning the car (whether a plug-in or map) doesn't in and of itself flag up a 'TD1' fault code or conventional fault code of any description. The 'flash counter' nonsense is just that. TD1 is the title of the entry type recorded against the chassis number on ODIS. A TD1 can be added on an out-of-warranty car also as it can affect software updates for other (non-warranty) issues.Simple version:
Car goes into dealer (VW group all the same to my knowledge)
Car plugged into ODIS (diagnostic tool)
Process of 'guided fault finding' performed and logged - needs to be submitted with a warranty claim or query to technical
ODIS will shout about anything it isn't expecting (fuel, timing, boost etc. inclusive)
If those unexpected things correspond with 'make more power' a TD1 entry is logged in the vehicle history.
Even if it's then all put back to stock the original entry stays and a new one showing the TD1 as 'inactive' is recorded. Both are date/mileage logged.
Only ODIS users with correct access (i.e. franchise dealers) can see this. It's not something that can be read or deleted by anything you can buy online.
In theory if any physical evidence of a piggyback ECU is removed AND the main ECU logs nothing unusual AND nothing has been logged at the dealership in the past then yes, it could go undetected. That however relies on a lot of assumptions about a piece of software designed to avoid such things going unnoticed.
So we're saying it's probably better to take any VW/Audi/Skoda to an ABT installer and get the power boost that the dealers will approve of? Quite a bit dearer but then that's peace of mind for you I suppose. Was going to take my Mrs' S1 to ABT to get it up to 300bhp but she's just sold it, gutted really that little pocket rocket would have been hilarious with an additional 30% power.

AFAIK an ABT install will still invalidate the Audi warranty. But ABT provides their own warranty to cover things.mrnkennedy said:

I have thought about a remap on and off as I would love to have one on the A7 Bitdi however I still have an audi approved warranty and don't want to take the risk. I contacted ABT purely because its connected with audi however they wanted 2k!!!!Gassing Station | Audi, Seat, Skoda & VW | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
