Hi all,

I keep changing my mind regarding changing cars but I really do want a change after six Subarus now and need to try and figure out the direction I'm going in. I actually have a hankering for a 997 911 but if I'm realistic a fast tow car would be better really.

I love the power and tuning potential of the C6 RS6, but am a bit worried by tales of carbon ceramic brake discs being £2k each to replace! Doesn't sound like much goes wrong with them though apart from the oil seal at the back of the engine... Plus I'd finally get to experience V10 ownership!

The B7 RS4... well... A car I have aspired to for years and which is now very affordable. What are these like for big bills etc.? Are they significantly better as a driver's car than the bigger RS6? What do you need to look out for on these?

The 8V S3 saloon... doesn't really fit my tow car requirement but they look so damn good! What do people think of these? I've always been turned off by Haldex if I'm honest and I might feel short changed taking an S over an RS but the RS3 saloon is way out of budget.

I recently had a six month love affair with a C5 S6 Avant and by God, I miss that noise. I don't mind at all the possibility a car might throw up a grand bill a couple of times a year, if the car is worth the outlay. Add to that the odd little thing that needs sorting every few months or whatever, that's not really a problem. A 3 grand bill like the C5 RS6 might throw up with its gearbox isn't really what I want though!

Interested to hear what people think. For towing purposes, current plan is to start over this autum and build a turbo MR2 Roadster so car and trailer will be around 1500kgs.

I don't believe any of the RS models were homologated for towing, so that may help restrict your choice. smile

Strange, UKTow.co.uk specifically lists them...

That's what I was told by a tow bar specialist when trying get one for my B7 RS4.

Whilst a standard A4 bar will fit, they are not type approved for the RS4. They advised that this could potentially cause problems with insurance especially in the case of a claim whilst towing.

B8 S4 or S5 Sportback would tick the towing box.
Supercharged V6, so not short on character.
Very easy to tune to 450 bhp with a stage 1+ from Revo

Possibly good middle ground between S3 and the RS4

Looked at them, like them, but fear it would be a bit... soft?

Quite possibly, albeit no worse than the S3.

A good all round package, yes.
A truly rewarding package, no.

(Hate to mention his name as it seems corny, but Chris Harris did seem to rate his B8 S4 Avant he had for awhile.)

But the B7 RS4 or C6 RS6 wont be type approved for towing.
The newer RS6 is though, as there is a member on here with one, who tows a caravan with it from memory.
