Collected a Golf GTD manual yesterday, 68 plate 7.5 standard car.

Over an 80 mile or so identical journey with my wife following driving my 7.5 R ... these are the results. Maybe of interest to some here looking for a daily if running cost is an issue. Obvious but predictable results.

80 miles in the R at 131.9 per litre & 37.5MPG = 12.79

Same journey in the GTD = 8.66

Saving 4.13 over 80 miles in the GTD

Those figures are both pretty impressive, what sort of speed were you driving? I had a 15-plate Mk7 GTD and remember the MPG taking a while to improve as the engine ran in and got a few miles on the clock.

About 1k miles on my 7.5 GTI, usually achieving 41 mpg on the commute home (70% motorway, 30% town). Overall probably in the mid 30s average, but 41+ on a longer journey seems to be possible.

Taking it easy 55 - 60 mph... I was 'trying' so the figures are the best possible. The GTD will get better but I expect my R to be around 29-30mpg driving how I like to drive.

To be frank, I'm happy to pay 5p/mile more to drive the R than a GTD...

I'd be interested to see the urban comparison; I frequently get mid-thirties on my 30mph commute and my average over the last 5k miles is 24.2mpg even with the misbehaving...

Definitely is. Only a 7 GTI (not that it makes much difference on the mpg front not having that extra .5), but the last single journey of distance I did, not trying too hard in either sense was over 400 miles at an average of 46mpg.
At least some of the benefits of the raft of roadworks & cameras north of Birmingham were cancelled out by the entirely expected traffic there, so I wasn't trying too hard or very lucky.

Overall day to day average over a decent number of miles ranges from around 33 in winter when schools are in and the traffic is ste to about 38 in summer when they're out and things are tolerable.

I’ve got the 230PS GTI engine in my TT and have been impressed by the consumption. It’s easy to achieve 40mpg on a tank of mixed driving, and I’ve managed to average 48mpg on a couple of long motorway journeys recently, not dipping below the speed limit!

The Mk7 R is ludicrously thirsty unless you drive it with economy in mind - mine is trending towards 28mpg. On the same driving pattern I was getting 32.5mpg with my previous TT (2.0TFSi, non-quattro). And to be fair, the TT didn't feel that much slower even if going by the raw figures, it was. Certainly in normal driving with you already doing 60mph it felt as quick to accelerate but the Golf has ferocious acceleration from low speed/ launches if you boot it.

You can get decent mileage on the open road if you hold religiously to the speed limit and avoid rapid acceleration, but that defeats the point of buying one in the first place. Even if you're generally doing really well to behave yourself but succumb to the temptation to give it the beans a bit, the economy immediately drops like a stone.

I blame the weight of the car - with driver and fuel it's going to be over 1500kg and it definitely can feel unwieldy, not as nimble as the TT was.

Yes you save money on the gtd with mileage

Unfortunately it doesn’t hold its value anything like the R so in actual fact come trade in time the gtd will lose you money especially in this diesel hating climate atm

How many miles do you think you’re engine took to fully loosen and offer the best performance/Mpg?

I got a new VAG 2.0 TDI end of June and have done 7k in it. I’ve always worked on 20k for a diesel to fully loosen so would like your feedback on your car.

Thanks.

You should be seeing some improvement by 7k miles compared to when it was new. 20k was probably about right for it to 'fully loosen', which for me at the time would've been about 10 months driving

Looking through my old Photobucket shots this seems to be the best run I bothered taking a picture of! Would've been largely M25 traffic

I can beat that already....

In fairness it’s averaging a true 55mpg over past 7k based on brim to brim. (Passat DSG Estate though not a Golf). Apologies about photo on side, I can never get it right on this website, fine on all others.

I have a 2016 Golf GTD 7 which will be 2 years old in December.Over 50 k miles my long term average is 48mpg.
On a recent motorway run with lots of steady 70 mph cruising I got 56mpg.
For the first couple of months when new rarely bettered 45mpg but it’s remained 48mpg for months now . That’s a 50/50 mix of urban to motorway driving.

Hi all,

I’m looking at getting a golf R 7.5. I was thinking of the GTD as I do around 20k miles per year. What sort of range do you get from a full tank? I’ll do 80% motorway miles and the 20% just around town.

Long-term average in my 7.5 R is 25mpg which is typically around 300 miles/tank. I can get 35-40 with careful, boring driving. But I didn't get it for economy...

Can anyone give me an idea what is the mpg for a GTD at constant:

a) 80mph?

b) Stop/start motorway traffic?

It is possible to get decent MPG from the Golf R, and the 7-speed DSG ‘box makes a big difference. This was on a 100 mile round trip up the A1 during the summer.

I used to get arround 510 miles to a tank doing the same type of driving as you. Can stretch it a tiny bit further if you keep going when it hits 0 miles remaining but risky!

I do about 20k a year and have a heavy right foot, only had 500 miles out of a tank once, that was mainly due to being stuck behind a heavy load on the A1 from Cambridge to Grantham, 45-50mph all the way. Usually get around 470 to a tank driving how I want to. 47mpg long term average.
