Touareg Hybrid - any good?
Discussion
Just as it says.
I know when they were released there was a bit of chat about how expensive they were, but they've lost a lot of that now. Still a bit dearer like-for-like than a diesel, and the mpg isn't earth-shattering, but if I wanted a large-ish, SUV-ish car that's not a diesel, would one of these be a terrible thing?
Which trim level are they based on? The standard SE?

Hybrid SUV's normally don't have revolutionary MPG, same goes for the BMW equivalent. Them being petrols outweighs the hybrid technology. I still think Lexus, Toyota and Tesla are the only current ones good at electrics/hybrids. That said, Audi are trying hard with their e-trons.
The Touareg currently has 285hp, which is a very good amount of power for this car, especially as it is a bit on the lighter side for SUV's in general. Even the pre-facelift current gen runs about 240hp. The V8 TDI must be very nice.

Thanks both. The issue I have is not wanting to spend significant money on a diesel of any sort, which may (or of course may not) become difficult to sell in a few years' time, otherwise the diesel would make sense - and be cheaper and easier to find.
Going to look at one alongside an RX450h tomorrow, see how they stack up.

The Touaregs are modern diesels, if they are euro 6 I wouldn't worry about the future with them. I'd worry more about miles and what you do. The X5 does 12K+ per year so that is best to be a diesel for us. The A6 on the other hand does 2K miles per year so there isnt much of an issue there, on top of that it is a Euro 5 petrol so there are no issues there.
The RX450h is a very fast machine, think it is about 340hp, and the electric motor makes it really fast. We wanted a GS450h as it offered similar performance to our current A6 3.0T, the only thing was that for our budget, they would be 1st gen facelifts, and we wouldn't be too confident with older batteries, so we felt the need to stray away. It certainly would have helped, saw 9.6mpg in the Audi today!

Hmm, well I went ahead and bought it.
It's in good nick and I got a decent deal on it. The engine is the supercharged 3.0 V6 from the S4, and when coupled with the electric motor it makes something north of 370bhp. It's, er, sprightly!
They're going to hold it for me until I shift my FFRR which won't be until the end of the month due to a planned holiday, so I'll report back after then.
