Hi guys,

Looking to purchase a 08/09 Audi A5 coupe. I really wanted the 2.0tfsi engine as I only do roughly 8,000 miles a year, with the longest journey being 12 miles. However due to the oil consumption issues a lot of dealers/traders don’t want to even stock them. I would like to buy from a trader for the warranty in case something went wrong.

Is it worth considering the 2.0tdi or even the 3.0tdi? Would the diesels be okay under short millage if I got the dpf/egr bypassed? 3.0 tdi is supposed to be a bulletproof engine.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Short journey and diesel = no no.

DPF delete will fail MOT.

Buy petrol or an EV.

Can you not remap the dpf out? Will be difficult to get an A5 that isn’t a diesel

I had a 2009 2.0tfsi from new. Was going through a litre of oil every 600 miles, Audi were still trying to claim that was normal.

It was my daily driver and i wouldnt have another one. The doors are very long so car parks can be a bit of a ball ache. Also, as the doors are frameless, the windows drop a few mm on opening. Unless its winter and they freeze, they dont drop but still open. They then dont shut.

That’s definitely not normal!:/ with a full service history Audi often replace the piston rings for free to resolve that problem. Don’t know if I should risk it and keep looking for a petrol one or stay away all together.

Do the window not shut correctly then if it’s freezing? Surely pouring barely warm water down the door would defrost it all

Owned a 2.0d A5 for over 3 years, one of the black edition plus versions. Superb car and did not put a foot wrong. Standard 2.0d engines need a map and hear they respond very well to them.. Owned an A4 2.0T quattro for 2 or so years, never had an oil or any issue for that matter. Must of been lucky..

Yes, warm water was the only way to defrost them. Thats OK when you're at home but a chew on if they've frozen up when you're not. I got stuck once so from then on had a flask in the boot during winter.

With that kind of annual mileage I would buy an S5.

A) Multitroinc
B) FWD, with that engine a horrible torque steery, jump across the road if they hit a white line, unpleasant sort of thing. 3.2 in that chassis needs quattro, copes ok with 1.8T and 2.0Ts though.

Didn’t even know they did a 3.2! Surely it would be still a good car if you put the power down sensibly? Anyone know the tax/insurance rates with these?

No it's not, engine too heavy, too torquey, aided and abetted by a rather crap and unreliable multitroinc transmission. Not sure but I also think it's a pretty high RFL.

I had a 12 reg 2.0 tfsi, never had an issue with excessive oil. I carried a can of de-icer to spray the windows if needed to get the doors to close. Spraying the seals with ptfe spray helped as well.

It was a lovely car!

They're not torque steering animals unless you have a right foot like Thors Hammer, in fact they have slightly less torque low down than the 2.0T.

The Multitronic on these was much improved, OP you'll find one of these a good drive go & test drive one.

I have a 2013 2.0 TDI 177 (dieselgate reversed, and remapped to circa 215).
I absolutely love it! Best all round car I've ever owned. My only criticism is the lack of feeling/numbness with the steering. Once you're used to it, it is still a very capable car.

I would strongly advise against a diesel doing 12 mile journeys. I do 40 mile journeys several times a week, and it's not until I'm about 15 miles into the journey that the oil is up to temp. So I'd imagine a regen is unlikely on a 12 mile trip.

Audi are quite good at sorting the oil consumption issue on the 2.0 TFSI from what I've read? TBH I'd be tempted to go 3.0 V6 TFSI over the 2.0, as from what I've seen/read, they're not really much worse on fuel.

Yea be sensible and put the power down efficiently and I’d imagine it would be a animal
