VW GOLF 2.0 TURBO DIESEL PROBLEMS

Hello , please forgive me on my punctuation, and blondness lol i blame my parkinsons for all of this...............my son has a Vw Golf 2.0 Turbo Diesel i think he just blew it coming out of work, white clouds off work coming out of the exhaust and to add to his pain a police traffic offficer kindly accompanied him to the kerbside offering his help !!...............any ideas on the best route to go with please ??..........turbo repair ?? turbo full referb ?? or engine drop and replacment ??

Is it a 2.0 bkd ?
If so it's quite common
Buy a new turbo from a decent company IE turbo technics, Midlands turbos etc
Remove intercooler and all boost pipework and thorough clean it out.
Worst case turbo parts have gone into engine. (Rare)
Best case is as above.
New turbo can be had for £3-400 and 6-7 hours labour for turbo swap and intercooler cleaning
