the mechanisms are prone to failing on these and either the door shuts and wont open. fails in the locked position. or fails in the open position.

does the door unlock manually and open normally?

if not i'd say the mechanism is faulty and the key should have no bearing on an individual door as the locks are controlled centrally before the unlock signal then gets transfered to the door mechanisms.

also it may be possible on your model to isolate doors that open. on my mk5 golf i can set it so that when i use the keyfob only the drivers door unlocks, the others then open off the button inside.

The garage (non vw) told us that the lock was broke - took the door apart and then said that the remote key needs recoding by vw.

There is no way to unlock the door from outside other than with the remote key.

I cannot open the door from inside either - this makes me think that the remote key has nothing to do with it - the remote key certainly works on the drivers door and all of the other door remotely.

Are the garage messing me about?

Any advice greatly appreciated - its a 10 plate golf estate s.

I should say we have paid them £225 and its not fixed.

The locks can be set to either 1 press of the remote to unlock all or 1 press for driver's door and a double press to unlock all. This is set within the car's menus in the screen in the middle of the clocks or with a 3rd party coding tool (eg VCDS).
As for coding the remote(s) either the car responds to the remote(s) or does not. The remote is either coded to the car or not, therefore if at least one of your doors/boot responds to it, then the remote is coded to the car.
It sounds like you have a faulty door lock which is not working when prompted.
The easy test is to go to the locked car and press the remote. Is anything opens, the remote is OK. If the passenger door is still locked do a double press on the remote and test the door again. Still does not open - faulty lock (or possibly a break in the wiring). Final check, press the door unlock button in the car - still locked then as above, faulty lock or wiring.
It's normally a crack in the lock's circuit board. Sometimes you can get them to unlock by pressing the internal unlock button while hitting the door where the lock is (just below the outside handle - 2 person job) or while working the internal door handle. Once open, replace the lock immediately as you never know if it will work again. If you cannot unlock the car then the door card will have to be destroyed while trying to get into the door.
I have not replaced one on a mk6, but the system is the same as the mk5. On the mk5 they are quite easy to replace as you just unbolt/remove the outer door skin rather than have to dismantle the door like on older models. I have no idea if this is still the case on a mk6.

Just did all of the checks you suggested and the door still not opening - all other door do with the remote. Very annoyed used this garage for years and they had the car for 3 days to give it back to us saying it was fixed we got home and the door didn't open. Took it back to be told it was fixed but the key needed recoding (i though this didn't sound right as it worked on all other doors). Unfortunately we paid them £225 when they said it was fixed. Going to have to take it back again - week off with the kids and can't open the passenger door - hoping that the boss will sort this out this time Thanks for your help.

i think if there is no difference to the car before & after then you been conned.

it can take an hour or so to get the door open with minimal/none damage. the part is about £120 from memory so 2 hours labour + parts and thats about what you've been charged.

That said they may have done the job, not tested and fault is elsewhere, broken wire? doubt it though.

my opinion, your mechanism is knackered and you've been conned by garage who couldn't/didnt do a proper job.
