Does anyone know why VW has stopped offering 4th and 5th Year Extended Factory Warranty which were only ever available at the point of purchase?

I was about to order a new GTI but can't get the warranty and I am now holding off. I am concerned that VW don't have enough confidence in their own products due to too many claims but I am only surmising.

Wow, great lurking!

Cynically? The dealers would prefer to sell their own, more expensive 'extended' warranties. The factory extensions were the rare bargains on the options list.

Probably the same reason they don’t include breakdown cover after the 1st year. Just to pi55 you off.

Thanks smile, Im now up to 3 posts. To be fair, most answers I need are already discussed, so I dont tend to chat on here.

I get that the dealers make money selling insurance products, and you are probably right I am being cynical. But I just couldnt help feeling VW are struggling with emissions, getting cars changed and remeasured and the last thing they need is warranty claims due to any of this in extra years.

But like you say, I am probably over thining it.

Its worked smile. But at least RAC is only a £100 a year or something.

I decided I was going to keep my next car for 4 or 5 years (lets see how that goes I struggle to keep them for a year. I had a new Gti in 2014 and liked it so I knew that I would get along with this and to keep it after the warranty I knew I would extend it.
I havent actually ordered the car due to the warranty not being available. If I cant get the extended warranty I may as well go second hand.
I refuse point blank to get involved in the insurance scam that is aftermarket warranties. Been there done that, ended up fighting to get money for months after I had forked it out.

Is it the dealer who's told you they stopped so they can sell you their own?

A shame if true, and I guess Seat and co will also stop?

We paid about £300 I think to extend the warranty to 5 years on our 2014 Leon when we bought it new, knowing we would keep it for a while and put on miles. Now at 4 years old and 80k miles we've had the front dampers replaced for leaking, which surprised me as though it would be W&T, so it's paid for itself already. Should also make it easier to sell privately next year if we can state there is some manufacturers warranty still left.

Yes but then I questioned and got a responsedirect from VW HQ..................................

I can confirm that we can no longer extend the warranty from three years to five years at the point of purchase. However, you can purchase an Extended Warranty just before the warranty is due to expire in the third year.

Just changed the way they offer the warranty, as long as it's still available to you at year 3 onwards, if anything it might be more useful now for further years etc?

The prices have jumped for 4th and 5th year (same for 1 year now than it was for 2 before) and there is a excess (which is optional) and a upper claim limit (which I dont know what it is, as I couldnt find it in the small print).

I had a camshaft fail on a GTi in the past and I wouldnt ever want to face that without a manufacturer warranty (on something so new at any rate).

A chap from VW customer service (Shefield number) just called. He said it was product rationalistation, but he reckoned (and I quote) 'that its costing them to much for 4th and 5th year factory warranties).
So I guess its just down to money.

Anyway, I guess it is what it is.....I just need to think of a different car or accept the change. Its all laughable anyway, as I say, I have never kept a car for anything like 4 or 5 years.

Strange as Audi still appear to be offering factory extended warranties on their configurator at the moment

The non-factory extended warranty isn't bad though, it's effectively the same level of cover. Also if you end up not keeping the car past the 3-year mark you'll save money.

Important to note that it's not the same kind of warranty at all.

The one they've dropped carried on the full factory warranty to 5yrs.

They've always offered year-by-year Extended Warranty which is an insured warranty, so the same as other 3rd party warranties. Indeed it's worse than, say, WarrantyDirect, as WD include wear and tear, VW's extended warranty doesn't.
