Vw say that the rear discs on my wife's mk 6 Golf are lipped and are 75% worn. Fronts are fine.

Mileage on the car is 25000 after 6 years, the car has had very gentle use.

My question is that I have always thought that most of the braking work was done by the fronts, am I wrong?

Golf’s have hill hold assist which uses rear brakes.

I sold my old golf at 89k on original rear discs with just the pads changed circa 60k ish.

I’d take the wheel off and have a look for yourself, I suspect there’s probably plenty of life left in them with just a bit of a lip (they go crusty on the lip due to low usage so always look worse than they are)

Thanks for the advice, appreciated.

I had the rear discs and pads done on my 12 plate Leon with 29k on it a few months ago, they had a big groove in them.

Fronts are fine still and from new.

So you have 25% left before they need changing, so thats 2 years or 8250 miles worry free driving for you.

Could be that's the issue, more than anything else. I'm finding I'm changing discs more on age than miles.

Could be with little use the calipers or pads are seizing and wearing one pad more than the others - that happened on daughter's Golf mk6 at 6yrs old, and on other daughters Jazz at 3yrs.

In a perfect world they'd be stripped and cleaned before and after winter but hardly anyone does that these days - I asked the indie who looks after my Merc and he didn't want to do it.
