A6 gearbox issue (2013 avant BiTDi)
Discussion
Struggling to fix a problem with our 2013 A6 Avant Bi-TDi (313ps), 8 speed auto
Anyone heard of this or had the same issue?
I've been told the same gearbox is used in the BMW 7 series and is made by ZF
issue 1 - select reverse, as soon as car starts to roll back the car applies the break and sounds and error 'bing'. message on dashboard says to select P the select the gear again. sometimes this works but rarely. On some occasions, but by no means all, this can be fixed by opening the boot, holding the boot button for 3 seconds to reset (lights flash etc) then the car will reverse without issue
Issue 2 - vehicle driving in 'D' gear box will appear to forget which gear it is in the 'D#' on the dashboard (to show you which gear you are in) will disappear and the car will go into neutral. A few seconds later it will re-engage the gear to were in and continue.
a friend of mine in the trade plugged it in and got a number of error codes, most of which he could clear except code (T1705... I think).
Got the RAC out and they thought it was the boot sensor. The suggested that the system thought the boot was open so would not reverse and instead applied the parking break (parking break was one of the errors, as was the start/stop system).
Took the car to an independent speacialist. Initially they couldn't find any error code and the car drove perfectly. They kept the car until the following morning, then saw the code(s) we had mentioned and suggested we talk to a gearbox specialist. their best guess is to replace the gearbox ECU at an estimated cost of £4,000
uch:
The gearbox specialist near us (A M Gearboxes) has mixed reviews and the local Audi dealerships have been useless on past issues, so struggling to figure out what to do next.
Love the car but don't want to spend £4k to find its the boot sensor.......
any suggestions???

All the symptoms and behaviour you describe mirror what used to happen with the D2 S8 gearboxes.
Though obviously this was a previous 5-speed ZF unit, the failure was the F125 switch. A google search will point to you to many references to a faulty gearbox range sensor switch. Its not beyond the realms of possibility you have a similar error....
