New Clutch Help - 2010 Mk2 TTS
Discussion
Hey Folks
As above, I have 2010 mk2 tts which has covered around 58,500 miles and while driving home on Sunday, rather spititidly, I disocovered the clutch was slipping. Happened in 4th around 4-5k rpm.
Now I'm new to Audi but in my 13 years of driving, I have never had to replace a clutch - ever. My 2.5T Mondy had 80k and the car before that had 145k on the clock, both of which were fine.
To say I'm rather livid is an understatement. I would not expect the clutch to go that that low mileage - clearly Audi have used substandard parts as other TTS owners have reported similar issues.
Car is out of warranty but I was wondering if there is anything unknown to me that might help in affording the replacement? I'm looking at around £1200 for new clutch and DMF.
Thanks for any contribution.

A colleague of mine had similar in his low mileage A5 Quattro which was caused by a leaking oil seal, it's not necessarily wear to the clutch plate.
Anyway, without having the gearbox removed and an inspection carried out it'd be difficult to properly diagnose what parts you need. The DMF might be ok, just clutch replacement required.
Have you phoned around local firms for a quote? This is a bread and butter job for any decent garage, really doesn't need to be a main dealer.
A clutch kit for your car on GSF for example is £450 and they're doing 60% off with code GSF60 which brings that down to £180.

Thanks both.
@Smiljan - given the legth of service the current clutch has had,I'd be loathed to put another basic one in. I can just see this being an issue in another 60k miles, which I would like to avoid. I've got a local specialist who is looking into the Helix unit I found vs the saches units they use. £1200 wasn't a main dealer, it was my local specialist to fit clutch and DMF.
@Cardinal - I've had the car for 2 years. Never done hard launches (6 spd manual) but I do like to give it some welly on those rare occassions. I'm assuming your reference to its length of service an "Audi" thing and not just the life expectancy of clutches in general. My previous 2 cars well exceeded 60k miles and never missed a beat.

No problem, just thought you might like some options. Uprated clutch seems pretty sensible if you're going to keep the car longer term.
Sadly after a bit of Googling it does look like Audi chose to use more standard clutch parts in the earlier TTS before moving to a better uprated Sachs clutch in the later cars so maybe yours is suffering from this.
Let us know how you get on when you do get it done anyway.

I can drive it just fine and it'll have to wait until March anyway. I just can't have the fun the car was intended for. That's interesting that you suggest they've upgraded the clutch in the later versions, that would indicate Audi knew it was an issue but didn't choose to do anything about those already suffering - I can't blame them really as it would be expensive but they should deal with them as and when it's a problem.Sadly after a bit of Googling it does look like Audi chose to use more standard clutch parts in the earlier TTS before moving to a better uprated Sachs clutch in the later cars so maybe yours is suffering from this.

There is a sachs kit which once added to the basket, with slave cylinder and code, is £285...Anyway, without having the gearbox removed and an inspection carried out it'd be difficult to properly diagnose what parts you need. The DMF might be ok, just clutch replacement required.

58k, count yourself lucky! my 2015 Mk3 TT needed a new clutch at just 15k miles...
Mine has a similar 2.0 TFSI to yours but with a lower power output (230ps). From reading online I've heard lots of other stories of people reporting similar with the Golf R and Leon Cupra etc. So I think they're just a weak design and not suited to the more powerful version of the 2.0 TFSI
I've also never had to replace a Clutch on any car before so was very surprised when this one needed changing.

@va1o - That's rediculous...I hope you gave Audi a good rollocking!! yeah same, never had to get one changed either.
@Blank - I actually haven't but now you mentioned it, I'll see if there is anything the garage is able to confirm. It feels rather crap through the gears so I've assumed its not been mapped.
