2.0TDI smoke blasts

Hi, I just do very short trips to shops etc and the car never really warms up much but on occasion I get a big smoke cloud from the exhaust ( apart from this the car runs perfect), car done 102K do I need to part ex, get a new engine or could it be an easy fix? Thanks in advance
