As the title would suggest I have a potentially big problem looming. The car is a 2009 1.8 Tfsi TT with 26,000 miles. This morning the engine started begrudgingly before sounding like it was down a cylinder and had been replaced by an old diesel. Last night it was running perfectly.

My Vagcom has given me various codes including 00022 camshaft position sensor incorrect assignment. Cylinder missfires on all too. It sounds like a total bag of spanners and I have a feeling a tensioner has gone causing chain issues. The car still runs or at least did when I started it this morning. There sounds like an occasional grinding noise too that I’m hoping isn’t the chain on the cover/ failed tensioner.

Can a sensor throw stuff off to this degree or am I going to be making friends with a mechanic?

I'd be looking around on webuyanycar.com etc to see what it's worth and moving it on quickly if I was you! The potential cost to fix timing chain issues on these can run well into 4 figures so not worth the hassle IMO. Slightly unusual on the 1.8 TFSI though, the 1.4 and 2.0 are the weaker engines from that era.

Can be confirmed by checking measuring block 093 in VAG-COM (aka VCDS), and how closely block 091 meets the requested angle....if at all!

If you own a post 2001 VW/Audi, I can't emphasise enough how crucial VAG-COM is. I've seen people WBAC or scrap perfectly good cars over a dead sensor.
