My inlaws have a 2012 Golf 1.6 Diesel. Recently it's had the DPF light come on a couple of times. First time the car also had the coil light on and was in limp mode so trying to drive it to regenerate wasn't an option, I wasn't able to clear anything with the OBDeleven app and dongle I have. They took it to a local garage who fixed it and managed to get it to regenerate.

The light came on recently, bit of a surprise as it had been on a 200mile trip a couple of weeks earlier. I had a go at running it up and down the local dual carriageway in 3rd gear but gave up after an hour. They took it to the garage again and either they cleared it or it cleared by taking it for a longer run ( The story was different depending on whether it was mother in law or Father in law who was asked rolleyes ) Anyway the light was off one way or another.

I decided to do a bit more poking around with OBDeleven. First I went and checked my mothers Touran ( Same age and has the same engine ) Here's the output

This is what I would expect compared to other stuff I have found online, and is about to do another regen by the looks of it when it hits ~25g Soot. Her car has done 28k miles and it seems to regenerate no problem, she generally drives short distance with a slightly longer run of about 20-30 miles once a fortnight/three weeks.

Here's from my inlaws Golf, it's done 60k miles

The bit that puzzles me is the Ash reading. I would expect that to be somewhere in the region of double my Mum's car ( so 20-25g ) but it says 0.02g. the negative reading for soot looks odd as well, it regenerated about 55 miles ago when they went to the garage. Anyone understand what this means? Does it look like there is an additional fault or something on the inlaws car with those readings.

I know for their driving they should swap for a petrol but that would be a difficult thing to arrange. His driving isn't great these days and the car has quite a few dings/marks etc that would need repairing to sell it and is also the reason I am trying to find a way to manage the DPF without him heading off up the motorway as we aren't comfortable with that idea.

It looks to me like the problem is with the engine oil (diesel in oil is a problem when dpfs dont get hot enough). Have the oil changed with 507.00 and take the car for a 50 mile drive. This should sort it.
