There are loads of threads on this - have a search on here or R8talk.com

Auto and manual is very much personal choice - need to drive both however autos are much more common than manuals.

As Reece has said you really need to drive both versions of the auto as they are very different and the manual is different again.

Not quite! We're saying try the following:

- Manual
- R-tronic (pre July 2012)
- S-tronic (July 2012 onwards)

The "plus" bit doesn't relate to gearboxes (came in auto and manual and coupe only) but is the hardcore, lighter version.

Just purchased an R8 V10 Plus 2014 S-tronic

Things that go wrong or fail early:
- Mag ride
- Manual clutch
- R - tronic clutch
- Air con compressors (Less of an issue on V10, engine out on V8)
- Chassis stress cracks on very early cars

Having come from a 997 turbo, the difference in feel and engine sound is incredible. I went for the Plus model specifically to avoid the variable dampers mentioned above and the S-tropic gearbox which uses two wet clutches and lasts much longer.

Any other questions feel free to ask.

Engine oil seal leaks appears to be complaint but I don't know how common or if it's an engine out job.

Extremely common, every single one I believe, same in S8 and S6 V10s.

Mines had it done, cost about £1200 at RE Performance in Swindon.
