What discount can I expect on a used Golf GTI/R from VW?
Discussion
There is not hard and fast rule on discounts for used cars, all sorts of factors come into play. The dealer may have a huge mark up on it or virtually nothing, only the dealer will know. I’ve managed £6k off in the past on a £50k car, I’m trying to buy a fiesta for my son at the moment and can’t get a penny off it, bizarrely the price has actully gone up since I started looking at it. If you are looking at nearly new you may find it cheaper to buy new through a broker, Drive the Deal etc offer around £4K off the list price of a GTi.

If you are going down the used route, I would say very little.. Most dealers now nationally price match their cars to be competitive.. How used are you looking? 1-2 years or more?

That's the thing that many people don't seem to appreciate, due to the internet making the UK a much smaller place, dealers have to price their used cars competitively and similarly all across the UK, there is no point in a dealer making their car more expensive so someone can get a chunk of money off as it would never come up on any internet search.G
I had a guy in at the weekend who was flabbergasted that he couldn't get a penny off a used car wherever he went "in my day ........etc", yes in your day it was different, to try and do a deal we gave off a nominal £100, the car was for his daughter, she had x budget and couldn't go over it, they were looking at cars that were £300-£500 over her budget I can imagine the conversation "look love, I've bought cars in the past, you will always get at least £400 off so lets get looking", it rarely happens now.
Find a car in your budget, go in expecting to pay that much and if you do get a bit off then happy days, if you don't then the car is within your budget and you can afford it and you won't leave dissapointed.
Used to be there was some wiggle room if you P/X'd a car in, but that seems to have gone since WBAC arrived.
The VW Approved site has a 'valuation' for your P/X, did that in February, popped off to the first VW dealer who rejected it out of hand and offered me a grand less for the P/X. No dice.
With no P/X there might be a slightly better price from a non-Approved dealer, but you'd loose the VW Das Welt warranty, free breakdown, free parts/labour repairs, the free MOTs and the option to extend the warranty.
The other straw-grasping options for a cheaper GTi might be unpopular or non-metallic paint colours, fewer factory options, a private purchase, or travel further 'north'.
GTi's are popular, though. Equals less 'wiggle room.'

All down to circumstance with the dealer/who you speak to - how long its been in stock for, sales that month, any need for space with incoming new stock.
True story, sit back and enjoy;
I contacted 5 dealers when buying a used R a few years back - some where total tools and had zero negotiation skills, another offered me £1500 off and a free service plan after being on the phone with them for 2 minutes. Needless to say, I brought that one. The car was superb, as new, no issues in 2 years of ownership.
Behold, the other 4 dealers then frantically called me back for the next 2 weeks offering me money off the cars they still had in stock - too late for that. One even asked me to 'withdraw' the deposit I had with the other vw dealership and they would offer me an even better deal, just to secure a sale. Imbeciles!

Not a lot really. May even be cheaper to buy new.
What I found in the last few years, especially those wishing to finance cars, a 1 year old used, ended up costing more than the a brand new car. With interest rates being higher and contribution towards finance being zero. Complete opposite to new cars..If you are a cash buyer, different matter, however I do not believe they have lots of margin in the cars if they want to sell them quickly.. I recently purchased a used S1, I got nothing off the car price, however managed to secure 2 years warranty and the next service free. Sometimes it is these slightly softer concessions where you can negotiate..

That's one of a few factors but is correct. WBAC actually drives UP used cars prices, not down. Their marketing is clever but a lie in that they are squeezing profit out of the used car market and increasing prices as a direct result.I bought a 2016 GTI recently and got £200 off for a couple of tyres - there is very little margin in desirable cars at that sort of price level. It's so easy to price-check these days as well that over-pricing a car for "haggle room" doesn't tend to happen.
Dozens of Golf Rs are coming back from lease at the moment so if you sign up for a BCA account you can watch a few go through auction; compare the sale prices to what you can buy one for and you'll see how tight the market has become.
Thanks all there are more cars hitting the market and prices are reducing, so it's a case of watching a number of cars, holding my nerve and buying when I feel the price offers value.
There is a surprising spread based on year and spec so quite a bit to be saved especially when looking at pre-facelift v facelift.

Sensible; there are still a good number of people around who will not travel to buy.
Mine popped up in Leicester so only a couple of hours to go and get. I quite enjoy the journey to go and buy something new and it's nice to have a good run back to familiarise (and figure out any problems).

I paid 2k less for a used 12k mile GTI approved from a dealer in the north east than one in the south and it had 5 k les miles and better spec
I live in the north east and very rarely buy a car locally, I bought my Clubsport from Chelmsford VW as it was the cheapest in the country. I’m looking for a used Fiesta at the moment, none that I have my eye on are local, and that’s mainly down to price.Gassing Station | Audi, Seat, Skoda & VW | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
