Leon Engine Failure Advice
Discussion
Hello,
I've got a 64 plate Leon that's had an engine failure. The garage have looked at it today and are telling me the variable valve timing pulley has failed which has then caused a cambelt to come off and wrap around the other. This has basically written off the engine as there are visible metal filings. We're now looking at sourcing a second hand engine as a replacement.
Obviously the car is outside of it's standard warranty, but given the timing pulley has failed (rather than the cambelt, which wasn't needing replacing yet) do you think I could expect SEAT to cover any of the costs? It seems as though there are quite a number of cases of timing failures on these engines across the web?
Cheers,
Rich

How many miles has the car got on it?
Have the service intervals been followed and were all services (and ideally other consumables work) done at Seat?
Depending on the above you may (but still may not) get a contribution toward the cost, although a new engine may still be cheaper.

The intervals have all been about right, first three were at SEAT and the last was at a local garage.

The intervals have all been about right, first two were at SEAT and the two more recent at a local garage.
I don't think you've got a prayer of a goodwill claim without a full dealer service history to be honest. The intervals have all been about right, first two were at SEAT and the two more recent at a local garage.
Concentrate your efforts on fixing it yourself.

Was the belt replaced at the standard interval?
The garage have told me that for this engine it would be due at 60 months which is September 2019. I'm not sure what the mileage would be, I don't have the service book to hand and it varies a lot with information on the internet.Update on this - took it to SEAT Bristol last week who gave it the once over and confirmed that the timing pulley had failed due to a mechanical fault. Will find out on Monday what they are offering. They've quoted £7.5k for fitting a new engine however, more than the cost of the car!
