1999 Mk4 VW Golf Gti 1.8T

Hi all,
This may be a question that is the opposite of what is normally asked..
So the car when purchased was lowered on coilovers and as it's such a painful drive ( Southampton is a pothole nightmare ) I am looking to return it to it's original suspension preferably using Bilstein shocks and springs.
So far I'm not having much joy in sourcing what would be the appropriate springs. ( possibly sourced the right shocks )
Apparently the original suspension would be a sports one so my first question is can someone please verify if that is the case ?
Based on this does anyone know which springs would be appropriate ?
Thanks in advance.

Any VW dealer will be able to look up the original springs for you; if you genuinely want it standard you may as well just have the VW springs (MK4 GTIs are a bit lollopy for me on standard suspension, mind you. Plenty of pitch and roll).

Would you look at something half-way house such as Eibach pro-kit? I'm sure Bilstein do an equivalent if that's your preferred brand.

I don't use a VW garage so are you saying I could just ring one up and ask them ?
Al;so what do you mean by 'pitch and roll' ?

Standard VW 'Sports' suspension springs (an option or standard fit to the Anniversary) are:

Front: 1J0 411 105 AM - 2 x green paint spots and 1 x violet paint spot.
Rear: 1J0 511 105 DJ - 2 x pink paint spots and 1 x violet paint spot.

Those will get your ride height back to where it should be and the softer spring rate will also improve the ride quality, reduce the jiggliness etc.

The paint spots are important because it's how VW differentiate the different rates of spring. They are painted onto a coil on each spring at the factory.

Anyway, as for dampers.......you can use OEM ones, or Bilstein B4 for OEM equivalence.

Pitch is the front end rising up during acceleration and down during braking and roll is the side to side movement when cornering.

Thank you for your reply..
Would I need to get the springs you are suggesting from a VW dealer ?
Also would you happen to know if there is a Bilstein equivalent ?

Yep, from the dealer. Those are the VW part numbers. Bilstein don't make springs, only dampers.

Eibach or H&R do some good springs that aren't belly scraping low and reasonable ride quality. As above, the GTI was a bit of a boat from the factory and could do with stiffening up a bit, but not with cheap bone shaking coilovers.

Hmm.. now I'm more confused..lol
I have been in contact with a shop on ebay and a seller provided me with a link to springs that would apparently be suitable.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bilstein-4x-B3-Spring-F...

What do you think about them ?
