Hi guys just a quick one, what is everyone putting in there mk7 R? I know it should be super unleaded, but should any super do the trick? Fuelled the car up for the first time today and put in BP 97 Ron, is this okay? Filler car recommends 98 Ron does it even make a difference? After a quick google search seem Tesco momentum is a favourite at 99 Ron, does it even matter? This is my first turbo car so not sure, always been in n/a BMW’s previously so the bog standard unleaded was fine. To be fair the car does feel abit livelier with the 97 in it, throttle response seems better or maybe it’s just my imagination, was running on the dealers fuel for the past few days so assume he threw in some cheap stuff

Many thanks

Shell V Power. Seems to return best mpg on it. Can't feel a performance difference TBH.

I have tried to put in Tesco momentum or at least sainsburys 97 (similar to BP ultimate I believe) in my R.

However, I have also run it on normal fuel as well, tbh theres not a lot of difference, and you probably wouldn't feel it in day to day driving.

I had to run on 95 in France and the car didn't explode, its still here. Filled up with 95ron in belgium as well as germany (think I stopped at the only fuel place in germany that did not have premium fuels!). Looking forward to this year which hopefully I can try 102 Ron fuel.

Tbh its personal preference, as you have just picked the car up (assumed 2nd hand being a 7R), I would run a few tanks, see what you think.

I do find I return better mpg on the better fuel, tbh I would say I probably break even overall in terms of extra spend and extra miles.

More importantly enjoy the car!

Think the standard setup is they recommend 98+ but will run ok on 95ron (check your fuel cap)

I've only ever run my VAG engines on 99ron+ (2.0TSI and 2.0TFSI) but both have them have had remaps for 98+ fuel.

My Porsche (3.4 NA) is mapped for 98+ ron fuel but I had to do a few motorway miles on 95 ron, it ran OKish.

The car will run on 95 but will find its pulling timing, I logged my previous car (Stage2 Cupra 280), we did logging with Momentum 99 and V-Power Nitro+ and Momentum was pulling a lot more timing.

I tend to mix between 95 and 98 - I can't say I've ever seen any difference in performance or economy with 95, so it's marginal.

I use either v power or Tesco momentum pretty much all the time. Car runs fine on either but possibly slightly better on vpower but not worth the extra ££ IMO.

I agree. I used to put V-Power in exclusively, but for a long time it has been 10p+ more per litre than Tesco Momentum. The car runs great on the Tesco fuel.

I used VPower almost exclusively for 3 years in my 3dr R but my estate has mainly been run on Tesco99. Only difference is the tail pipes are a lot sootier, although as the exhaust is completely different it’s not a fair comparison. Have put the odd tank of Shell standard in both like and mpg doesn’t drop but car feels noticeably flat and also doesn’t sound as good.

The estate doesn't have valves in the exhaust like the hatchback, so it's no surprise they're sootier.

Had numerous S3s (sticker recommends 98) and subjectively they do rev more freely and feel a little more energetic on super.

Current golf (230 2.0T, sticker says 95) I'm on my second tank of V Power and have noticed so far zero difference in average economy and zero difference in feel. Might do one more tank but I've a feeling I'll leave it on the 95 the sticker asks for.

Years ago there was some research into V-Power and Tesco Momentum conducted by a tuner (I think) and Tesco gave better performance over the long term than V-Power. I believe they monitored performance figures including MPG etc.

I can't recall the detail from it but it was pretty comprehensive and Tesco definitely performed better.

Thanks for all the input guys, so as I thought Tesco momentum and v power are hot favourites, although some of you think it doesn’t really make a huge difference compared to a standard 95 Ron fuel. The car does definitely feel a lot better running on the 97 I put in yesterday, I will try a 99 momentum and 98 v power and see how I get on I think. Didn’t know this little thing was this thirsty only topped up yesterday and been to work and back and back to work and it’s dropped a few notches on the fuel gauge ffs lol so would I be right in saying any super unleaded when possible ie 97-99 and 95 if not available, it won’t make a difference to cars performance or running and won’t do any damage? Cheers

I was saying it doesn't seem to make a difference on my lower powered 2.0 T (for which 95 is recommended anyway) but for the S3/Golf R version I very much did feel one.

I also choose Tesco over Shell where available not only for the reasons you describe but also that it seems to be at least 5p/litre cheaper and earns me lots of Clubcard points. Sadly I'm nowhere near a Tesco fuel station either at home or work.

That was done by niki Gower at r-tech. Pretty much the go to person for 1.8t 2.0tfsi and 2.0tsi tuning.

Niki isn't really doing the EA888 engines yet

It seems for performance either the Tesco or VPower will do. However only the VPower has additives that should positively influence engine longevity. More important if your engine is tuned obvs..

99 is ideal, 97+ is better than nothing, 95 for emergencies.

I run my Alfa (1.4 Multiair) on 99ron where possible and my Triumph Bobber, even stuck some 99 in the Honda mower for a laugh.

I have discovered VPower 99 + ethanol (E40) is a better fuel. smile
