Mk7 golf GTD or GTI
Discussion
Originally was looking at buying a mk7 or 7.5 golf gtd, a friend reckons i should look at the gti as an alternative given the future of diesel cars and not that much better mpg. What do people think? Have around 17k to play with, Commute approx 300 mile per week on mostly b roads. Any major problems with either car? Water pumps were mentioned on the gtd but not sure if thats rectified with the 7.5 models?
Thanks
Thanks

Aside from the colour, gearbox and maybe the slightly iffy leather, which are all absolutely down to personal preference, this is the answer. Mine is going up for sale in next 2 week that’s got a bloody good spec 16 plate 34k miles

That service sounds expensive though for the mileage and pads & discs at 34k is a bit heavy footed
.The service schedule is every 2yrs or 20k miles
The service was done on August 9th 2017 and hasn’t covered many miles since so it’s the mandatory 2yr service coming up
As for the brakes they did the front pads and recommended discs at the same time and then said might as well re fresh the rears,
Hardly heavy footed when the mileage is pretty much all motorway miles using the adaptive cruise,
The leather is a £1750 option and is much nicer than the plaid imo the colour suits it and the gearbox works well with the adaptive cruise which is why I opted for it
Each to their own but you won’t find a better spec one for the money

I've driven two 7.5 GTDs recently, and I was actually quite impressed.
The GTi is more of a 'hot hatch' with, as you would expect, a revvier engine, up to the limit.
But, for higher mileage, I'd prefer the GTD, which has stronger mid-range delivery, better suited to day-to-day driving. Fuel consumption should be about 25% better on the D.

I've just had the major service & first MOT @ 40k with a very similar aged car, which prompted the question on the cost & the heavy footed comment (sorry if it sounded antagonistic). The service was done on August 9th 2017 and hasn’t covered many miles since so it’s the mandatory 2yr service coming up

Maybe just me, but still on, I think, need to check, 50% rear pads (that ACC) and more on the fronts IIRC. Service was presumably about £350 out of the service pack, diff oil was @ £120, 2x tyres were a smidge under £190, so brakes and DSG sounded heavy (latter not relevant). However, I do have the joys of a not fit for purpose clutch instead

. Also need a new water pump, though has been decided that's a warranty job, just in time
.We'll have to agree to disagree on the colour, gearbox and seat trim, recession black,, Manuel and Tartan is the way to go
, but I would have liked some of your other choices (Dynaudio & big Nav). However, mine was a lightly used need something now Billy Bargain, so it has done what it needed to do & mostly very well.Nice car for someone & in terms of the original question, GTI PP for anyone who cares and doesn't do moon miles is the answer.

Barely a hot hatch, I borrowed a mates MK7.5 manual GTI for just over a month. It looked like a hot hatch, sounded like one but it just didn’t go like one, it’s a hatch back with a powerful engine, it didn’t feel stable above 80 mph, felt very unsettled. Axel tramp was very violent at times and I’m told it’s because it didn’t have the LSD, only came with the PP which is ridiculous as it’s a GTI, just sell the car complete! If it’s a ‘hot hatch’, then the new Civic Type R should be called ‘Hyper Hatch’
As for the OP’s dilemma, I never saw more than 30mpg in my mates manual Golf, the difference between the 2 in fuel will be noticeable, my 430d at the time averaged 32 and I have a heavy foot.
I think you should drive both before you decide, some PH’ers hate diesels but a GTD could make better progress and feel punchier than the higher powered petrol model, the GTI had diesel like torque but had to be people revved out to make proper progress unlike the GTD.
