Passat road noise - case continues
Discussion
I posted some time about B8 estate passat having poor road noise when i reach a speed of 75/80. (done 50k miles). The noise could be explained as more of an exhausty noise.
Originally they replaced a wheel bearing, which never sorted it, in fact its got worse I think now.
It went in last week as I had an emissions light go (Lambda), i'd had thought these would be sorted now with VW as i've had lots go before on others years ago. Anyway that was replaced.
Went out for a run with the engineer (oh yes, that would wind me up)....they sit it on the ramp and give me the BS excuse its the tyres wearing low.
Regardless i'd planned on getting these done, so off to get them done Monday....
Test run on the MW yesterday and it's exactly the dam same.
Has anyone experienced this type of noise issue?

We had a B5 Passat and road noise was always an issue when we first got it . which I put down to OEM Brigdestone Potenza tyres , having had noisy Bridgestone tyres on the previous Mazda6.Which were eventually swapped for F1s
Went through the same process as the OPwith the main dealer , to no avail .
Then I noticed an odd wear pattern on rear tyres , 50p size dimples at regular intervals on each side of the centre line of the tread , swapped front to back and for while the noise subsided , but after a while came back ,along with the wear pattern .
.
The main dealer checked rear end wheel alignment and said all was correct .
So in desperation , all 4 tyres were swapped to Goodyear F1s and from then on , no odd wear pattern or road noise , conclusion Bridgestones and Passats don’t go together .
Or BTW do Tiguans , Bridgestones off Goodyear on , less road noise

Opps...shouldn't be titled Road noise as its not really road noise tbh. I can hear the road noise independently.Went through the same process as the OPwith the main dealer , to no avail .

I've put pirellis on this time.
I've got the warranty running out in a bit so this might get heated if it can't be resolved with VW, certainly as i have the car on HP not PCP.
More information might help diagnosis.
Does the noise only occur at 75/80 eg. does it occur at lower speeds and higher revs?
Does it occur at higher speeds above 75/80?
Does the sound / pitch change depending on speed or revs?
Is the noise the same regardless of road surface?
Is the noise louder in front / back / side - can a passenger help here?
Is the noise the same when the car is fully loaded?
Can you hear the noise with the windows down?

It kicks in at 75/80 and not noticable at lower revs and continues on through until i reach 170....(kidding).Does the noise only occur at 75/80 eg. does it occur at lower speeds and higher revs?

Much more noticable on better roads, however i'd expect this as the roadnoise probably dampens it out.
Seems to be in the front, my missus concurs with me it sounds exhausty.
Noise is the same regardless of weight.
With windows down yes.
I had a 2.0tdi b8 did 60k in 3 years, I do remember reading someone having a similar issue. When you say exhaust noise, are we talking escaping air? Throaty or a hum?

It's a bit of a throaty hum noise, it isn't noticable below 75 as much.http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/...
I will be amazed its resolved with wheel bearing myself.

Im on my 3rd VW group car and they all got noisier as the tyres wore down.
All tyres have been premium high performance variants. Bridgestone, Michelin, Goodyear.
Its not tyre noise as I've put four new ones on now. All tyres have been premium high performance variants. Bridgestone, Michelin, Goodyear.
Sounds exhaust based, which to me would indicate they aren't bothered in digging into this VW as they know its nearing EoW.
Highly unlikely to be the same as a noise on my Q3 2.0 TDi, but maybe something similar - my car seemed to develop excessive diesel knock when the engine was labouring between 1500-1800 rpm. Eventually I found out that it was a vibration occurring where the air filter box connects to the duct on the radiator, lining the joint with foam tape cured the problem.
Could it be that the noise you’re hearing is a vibration or wind noise from under the car, perhaps related to the under engine panels? I've seen cars with those panels flapping badly but maybe a poorly fitted one may make the more subtle noise which you are hearing, which may explain why it only occurs as the speeds you mentioned?

im lost on it, which is why VW seem to be. Could it be that the noise you’re hearing is a vibration or wind noise from under the car, perhaps related to the under engine panels? I do think the wind noise might be possible, if I take my foot off the accelerator it is still there.
After four visits to VW to resolve a noise i get on my vehicle i'm completely being fobbed off. The noise is clear when I take the mechanics out.
First Visit
-Stated noise so they replaced a wheel bearing
-Noise the same
Second Visit
-Mechanic taken out and adknowledges noise issue
-Stated tyres needed to be replaced (They were running low so i did)
-Noise the same
Third Visit
-Mechanic taken out again....
-Wheel bearing replaced (opposite side)
Fourth visit today
-Mechanic taken out, adknowledges noise....
-Just been phoned and all they've done because they can't track a fault is swap the tyres front to back
I'm sick of this...Whats the best route to push this further? I run out of warranty in 3 months.
