Audi A3 V6 cooling fan
Discussion
Hello All
Appreciate that the weather is warm at present, but have noticed that the engine cooling fan on the above car (2005 3.2 V6) seems to come on a few minutes after start up from cold, when the temp needle on the gauge has hardly moved. It does settle into the expected cycle of on / off / on / off etc, but wondered whether this is normal?
I'm just used to having an engine fan operate when the car is up to normal temp and getting hotter.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks.

Double check that when the A/C is enabled, the radiator fan(s) runs on low speed. A common fault on some VAG cars is the resistor burns out on the low speed circuit, which gives similar symptoms to what you describe; fan running / pulsing on high speed even when engine is cold. Sometimes the pulsing can blow the fuse on the high speed circuit.
I believe on later cars the fan is controlled using Pulse Width Modulation (Pwm) and the fan controller can fail.
I'm not sure what method your particular year of car uses.

I had a 2004 A3, 3.2 and the fan controller failed - the fan would stay on constantly even with ignition off/key out until it ran the battery flat.
I took it to the local Audi garage, they told me the controller and fan were integrated and so had to change the whole unit, IIRC there were 2 fans and they changed them both?
