Audi A3 temperature gauge - not working

I've had an intermittent issue on a couple of occasions with the temp gauge on the above car (2005 3.2 V6), where the needle on the gauge doesn't move. It will then (after a while) suddenly spring back to normal running temperature on the gauge.
Although I will get this sorted (presume temp sender / sensor?), I have a service and MOT in about 4 weeks time so was hoping to leave it until then.
But I was wondering - if the gauge is showing zero / cold, does this have any impact elsewhere in the running of the car?
Appreciate any comments.
