In the title, basically.

I'm very tempted at current prices but haven't done enough research.

Fill me in guys.

Also - must have accessories?

I don’t think any particular bravery required! Unlikely for much to go wrong (except mag ride dampers), and if you pick up Audi’s extended warranty on the key mechanicals for £1300 or so, you’re sorted should most of the expensive bits let go.

As already said, they are not they scariest prospect by any means, especially when compaired to some of the Italian equivalents.

A PPI is essential if you are to avoid the potential for some big bills. Mag ride dampers are a regular failure and come in at around £1200 each. Consumables such as brake discs and tyres will set you back another £2K and there are other less common issues that could be around the corner if not identified prior to purchase.

Get yourself over to R8talk.com as that is the go-to-place for all things related.

I have a R8 v10 spyder 2010 54,000 miles, set of tyres approx £700, service is quite reasonable, if you find a car you like go on the AUDI website to see how much a warranty will cost, mine was £1800 for the comprehensive one or £1300 for main parts, you can pay monthly at no extra cost, I dint get mine inspected prior to purchase but have been reasonably lucky apart from requiring a new clutch, the best person (if he is available to use) for inspection would be Ricky from RE Performance. Good luck they are fantastic cars

I've had a late 2013 Plus for over 3 years. Bought it with 3K on as the 2nd owner and now close to 40K. You need a full Audi warranty, mine had a DSG box at 25K miles as it started to whine and Audi replaced it for a brand new one, which was a 23K bill, though my contribution was £100. Oil leak, noisy rear suspension took time to diagnose and fix (suspension not oil) and the majority of Audi dealers are dire with the R8, so you need to find one you can work with but if you do you'll have a great car. Tyres are £850 all round for PSS 4's, pads (ceramic) £1300 and discs are.....SELL EVERYTHING.

Thanks.

The car I am looking at has Full Audi and one Indy SH (the most recent was Indy) would this exclude it from having the Audi extended warranty?

How much was the clutch? Was this in an S Tronic gearbox or manual?

I'll track down RE.

LOL the car I'm looking at has steel discs.

My current Audi has similar tyre costs, so happy with that. I'll look into the Audi Warranty. I have this with my current car, allbeit at a much lower price. I would be happier with this and it seems a reasonable cost considering it is a six figure V10 car.

On youtube there is a guy who made a video of having bought the cheapest R8 online (in the US that is), one thing that stood out to me was the fact that it was rendered a total loss, due to a failed left upper front shock absorber mount (or both?). Might be worth watching the video (I believe it was a V8 though), if you go through with buying one it's worth checking, and maybe even take preventative measures.
I've never heard anything odd about the V10, has the same carbon build up problems as every other FSI engine, and I believe there is something with the intake manifold that can go wrong (if I remember correctly, swirl flaps).
There is a Dutch video series on youtube (called 'klokje rond') where high mileage cars are test driven and inspected carefully, one is about a daily driven R8 (V8), it had 250.000+ km on the odometer and very little was wrong with it; you can look it up, it has English subtitles.

EDIT: oh wow... noticed this is my first post in the PH forums... oops

I think the car in the video had a cracked frame / sub-frame following impact. However, as with all such videos the new owner made light work of the repair.

I recently bought myself a R8 v10.

Looked at a few of them and drove a few before buying. There’s a few rough examples on offer as they are coming to a price and age where neglect is an issue. I set about looking for a manual but soon found that I actually preferred the RT over the 6MT personally I think it’s a good gearbox, but takes more than a quick drive to learn how to drive it at its best! I think there’s a lot of jumping on the bandwagon folk saying get manual. I tried both and bought the auto.

I went for top spec. Carbon fibre everywhere, ceramic brakes, wingbacks, alcantara headlining / extended leather etc

It’s also a low miles 1 owner car with full Audi service history and carries a years warranty which can be extended.

Could have bought one for a bit cheaper but I think these cars are mileage and spec sensitive plus just one unseen large bill would have had you in the better car anyway.

I plan to keep mine for a while so not worried about residuals. It’s a fantastic car. Really puts a smile on yer face when you drive it.

Big bills on these can be but not limited to magride replacement, clutch replacement, ac repairs and god forbid new disks (ceramic - £2.5k each!)

Hopefully it doesn’t rape me too severely but I’m not too worried I think maintain it well and it’ll be fine, suspension and to a degree AC (several cars I viewed didn’t work!) aside these are solid cars.
