A4 Avant vs A6 avant
Discussion
This has no doubt been asked before but searching hasn't really helped.
There seems to be only 20cm difference between these 2 cars... Where does that extra length go, the boot? Or the back seat?
Is the A6 Avant much more spacious in the back? Both seem to have the big column thing in the middle floor of the back seat which is restrictive.
Would the A6 be like an Avensis size, or is the A4?
I really fancy an A6 Avant (2-3 yrs old) but the salesman was pushing me more towards the A4 Avant, saying it was refreshed more recently in my price range so I would get a better spec than the 2-3 year old A6 Avant...
Thanks

20cm doesn't sound like much but in car terms it's pretty significant when it comes to space. You'll find a few extra cm for legroom in front and rear, bigger boot etc.
Do you need the extra space of the A6? For once I'd be inclined to agree with the salesman... The A6 is incredibly dated inside, it shows its age Vs an A4 of the same age. Unless you needed the extra space I'd take the A4

Thanks, I just need to decide if the A4 Avant is big enough, I have 2 kids oldest is 7 so should be good for a good bit.
Want to be able to put bikes in the boot.
Carwow had a YouTube video which compared the A4 Avant, to a Skoda superb estate and a Passat estate. I couldn't understand why since surely the A4 Avant is much smaller than those two.

I’ve owned a couple of each, and felt the A4 was a much better drive with a nicer steering feel. But, the leg room in the back is very limited, and you would struggle with three adults in the back. The A6 is also a lovely drive, but much bigger inside. It certainly feels more than 20cm - the boot is huge. However, parking the A6 could be a challenge. Never impossible, but it was hard to find a space in the local high street for a quick Saturday morning haircut!
Pros and cons. Both good cars, but the A6 is a better allrounder.

go for the a6. Its slightly better build quality than the a4, the a4 avant is quite small inside.
Salesman is pushing you as there's always loads of a4 stock to shift.
Who told you the A6 is better built? I've owned both recently (in RS form) and can safely say there's no difference whatsoever in build quality. The A6 is heavy and feels a lot bigger on the road than the 4, but rides better on the motorway. I find the A6 a nice ownership proposition but not much fun to hustle along and will probably downsize next time.Salesman is pushing you as there's always loads of a4 stock to shift.
Thanks for all the input, seems it's not quite clearcut. I have an Avensis saloon and don't really want to downsize in space, so I wasn't sure if an A4 was smaller interior wise.
I'm going to get back to a dealer this week they didn't have any used A4 Avant in stock but might be getting some in.

Depends where you normally drive, few things with the A6:
1. It's a very big car! If you spend time down country lanes you may have wished for the A4 as it's narrower.
2. It tends not to fit in most car parking spaces.
3. Mines a C6 and the Front Doors are long and a foot thick, parking in multi-storeys, town car parks can be a nightmare.
4. They are heavy, although I believe the C7 is better than mine on weight.

Could always go for a A6 avant conversion (rs6)

I would agree with all of this, and for me this is why the A4 Avant just wins based on its ability to still be parked in tight spaces. I know on paper the size difference isn’t huge, but in reality it is significant. If however you spend a fair amount of your day on the motorway, and with adult sized people in the back, go for the A6!1. It's a very big car! Depends where you drive. We can only say about 3 series/5 series as we have both. I. Hi he case of BMW the 5 is better built just feels more solid and relaxing to drive. I suspect the A6 will have more insulation, etc as it’s a more luxurious car on the range. May not be obvious but I bet it’s quieter inside.
Boot size the A6 will really pay off compared with the 4, particularly if you want to carry bikes. As a family car for 2 kids and their stuff if roads are suitable where you drive just get the A6. No need for Tetris style packaging when going on a road trip with the family...

Definitely agree with above - if your local roads aren’t all pull over / reverse to pass country lanes then get the A6.
That said, the roads round here are like that, and I’d still take the A6
Boot space in the A6 Avant is great for bikes and rear legroom fantastic.
I’ve gone from a ‘15 A6 Avant into an ‘07 RS4 Avant. I realise the RS4 is a few generations old and they’ve grown, but it’s tiny inside.
If space and family driving is your main consideration, I’d say an A6 would be better.
