Seat are telling me that the cambelt needs doing on our 5 year old Leon (it's done 90k miles) that seems to match with my understanding of earliest of 5 years or 120k miles. Cost is £399, plus £179 if I want the water pump changed at the same time. Seems a lot, especially as we will be selling the car soon.

Question, I know on older VAG engines it was always recommended to change the water pump at same time, but thought that was due to the belt running that as well. Is that still the case with newer 1.4tsi engines? If not, is there any benefit to the water pump change?

Some of the newer tsi engines have a water pump that runs off the belt driven of the gearbox end of the camshaft so there is no need to change it. Not sure if yours is the same but the ladt 1.4 tsi we did was like this.

The uplift for the water pump seems high - it's usually more like £50.

Annoying on these cars - when the later petrol and diesel engines were introduced VW was saying the cambelt was 'lifetime' which I suppose could be self-fulfilling, but in the UK they've defaulted to the 5yr time interval.
