Mk4 gt tdi what to look out for
Discussion
Off to look at one what do i need to look out for?
its had turbo genuine garret, dual mass fly wheel, clutch, full suspension wishbones, droplinks, bushes, shocks, bushes in the last year.
Rust is an issue isnt it front arches i know of anywhere else to look for?
also anything else to be on the lookout for?

Rust in the roof rails and rear tailgate. Climate control issues. 150's wear cams after 140k miles, but perform well and are economical when driven with reserve! its had turbo genuine garret, dual mass fly wheel, clutch, full suspension wishbones, droplinks, bushes, shocks, bushes in the last year.

cheers so far its between this and an 8PA a3 2.0 s line quattro unsure what to go for i preffer the mk4 the mrs the a3 as obviously it looks nicer as its a much newer style she is only going to be using it for the train station run every day 20 mile round trip.
The a3 was ok but atleast 1500 more but had worn through drivers bolster starting to bubble on the rear arch in the crap trap infront of the rear wheel scabby wheels etc

What’s yer budget? The a3 was ok but atleast 1500 more but had worn through drivers bolster starting to bubble on the rear arch in the crap trap infront of the rear wheel scabby wheels etc
Think Passat Estate 130TDI highline dirt cheap loads of kit and will run and run or A6 with same unit
Check under any mats that the carpets are not damp as the MK4 Golf is prone to water ingress. Water can leak through the pollen filter housing, door seals, rear light clusters and vents behind the rear bumper.
Broken springs, worn bushes, droplinks and strut top mounts and bearings.
Another common failure, is the resistor burns out in the low speed circuit of the radiator fans. With the air con enabled and with an ambient temperature of grater than 5 degrees, the radiator fan should rotate on low speed. If it does not or the radiator fan pulses on high speed then the resistor is blown. Solution is to replace fan or fit external resistors or aftermarket PWM control unit.

3.5 really she doesnt want anything too big train carpark is small but its still gotta be able to cover distance in comfort etc
You do know you’ll get a lot more kit from the models higher up the Range. I only got £6.7k for my F10 535d with 113k on it so I’d not have any interest in what is evidently a really old golf when my offering was in immaculate condition
For 3.5k, I’d be looking at something newer than a Mk4. They were good in their day but now the youngest models are 15 years old.
The engines are long lived, but the car may well be falling apart around it. Certainly was the case with the 2 VWs I had at around 10-12 years old.
3.5k should get you something with the 2.0 common rail engine if you’re happy with something higher miles.

Very true - lots of the perishable parts will now be worn so pricy and a balls ache to replace yourself. Spend £5-6k you’ll get a far more modern car with far fewer problems. Buy cheap buy twice
I’d say a mk4 Golf TDI is a £1k car anymore and it’s £ down e drain old old cars
