Sports cat vs decat- golf r/Audi s3

Hi guys so not so clued up on this sports cat and decat malarkey. I know what they are obviously but why do people fit decats if a) it will throw error codes, b) will fail your MOT. I’m comparison what difference is a sports cat to a normal cat, just lighter? Any noise or power increase?

Reason I ask is I’m currently stage 1, come across a few great deals for bits to enhance my stage 1 and needed for a stage 2 car. I only require a downpipe now to make stage 2, more than likely an intercooler too, got me wondering that’s all.....


Bonus question, if I’m running a custom stage 1 map on my car, and wanted to go stage 2 with APR or a different tuners stage 2, can this be done with out getting there stage 1 first? Reason being I spoke to an APR dealer who seems to think you have to go stage 1 with them first before going stage 2. Surely this is nonsense?
