I’m looking for a set of all season or winter tyres for my 2016 Passat; currently it has 235 40 19 tyres; there are a few promotions available at the moment that mean I can get a set of 245 40 19 for £200 less than the 235s.

Am I likely to have an issue going to a 245? Logic says the edge of the tyre will be 5mm closer to the edge of the arch and the wheel arch liner; I’m sure that VW would have allowed more clearance than this as 5mm is a very small tolerance.

Other than the overall diameter being ever so slightly different and a tiny percentage different on the speedo is this a bad idea increasing the width to 245?

245 40 19 seems a much more popular size with many more tyre options.

I’m assuming this is treated as a modification and needs to be notified to the insurer?
