Given these cars have similar features, and share similar components, is a new A3 likely to be more reliable than a VW Golf ?

Depends!

If you're buying a new model variant of car (different engine, turbo, new dashboard, new MMI system), then you're more likely to have issues.

One of the reasons I still think skoda *tend* to be more reliable is that the tech' has trickled down through audi / vw first, and the issues mostly ironed out.

I don't think the build quality is that different between an A3 and a golf (or a leon / octavia for that matter) - they're built all over the world in countries that all have Friday afternoons

An A3 is virtually a Golf. The interior is perhaps better looking (subjective) and better quality materials but that’s about it.
