Hello all,

Please feel free to point me in the direction of another thread as I am sure this has been done many times over but I am looking at buying a mark 1 S5.

I was looking at E90 M3s and I ended up of the opinion it will clearly be a far better drivers car than an S5 BUT I have decided I dont want to spend more than £10/11k realistically and to get a good E90 M3 it looks to be around 14/15+ - I am also factoring in that I assume the M3 will be a lot more expensive to run.

The main questions I have are....

1. General buying advice
2. Mod advice? I get the impression the exhaust is a bit muted so wondered what the best options to look out for are? Miltek? Anything else that is worth looking out for/doing?
3. Any interesting spec options to keep an eye out for?
4. Any options, colours, wheels etc which are generally preferred and might help resale value? Or just make it easier to sell?
5. Any alternative cars to consider at the same price?I ideally want a v8 and have written off the idea of getting a Monaro.

Ta very much

Loads of good advice here https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Unless you’re looking for the 4.2 V8 S5? ( the above is only applicable to the 3.0 V6).

Assuming we are talking about the 4.2 V8

1. General buying advice:
There are a-lot around on the market. As with any car go and have a look at more than one, drive more than one. Look out for front suspension knocks and bangs, they have a tendency to wear quickly. Listen for wheel bearings. The FSI engine as with all the others have a tendency for a carbon build up, so ask to see invoices if its been done or adjust budget according to need it being done at some point. The oil filter housing where it meets the V of the engine leaks, and will appear as a leak down the front of the engine, again easy enough to change while having a carbon clean. Door locks are another common failure point on the B8 Chassis, replacements aren't that bad price wise, its a mornings job to change both.

2. Mod advice? I get the impression the exhaust is a bit muted so wondered what the best options to look out for are? Miltek? Anything else that is worth looking out for/doing?
The exhaust is pretty quiet as standard, Milltek seems to be the go to choice, i have some aftermarket exhaust on mine, drones below 2k but above sounds lovely, and not too loud. but a decent system will make it sound a million times better.

3. Any interesting spec options to keep an eye out for?
Look for one with the Nav system (its not that great but the centre console just looks better, B&O speaker system. There was a comfort package available, which gave the advanced key, memory seats, folding mirrors, keyless start etc. I think this is a nice option to have.

4. Any options, colours, wheels etc which are generally preferred and might help resale value? Or just make it easier to sell?
Just buy what you like, i spent ages waiting for the perfect spec, black with red leather, carbon trim and all the options, Think the only things i dont have is a sunroof and hill hold. They are all normally pretty sensible specs and colour choices anyway, so will always appeal to another owner

5. Any alternative cars to consider at the same price?I ideally want a v8 and have written off the idea of getting a Monaro.
No!
