HI All,

I've got a curious problem with the central locking on my Golf. Other than not working, the symptoms are:

  • Whenever I press the lock or unlock button on the fob, there's a definite 'clunk' on each door but none of them (un)lock.
  • The only door that 'works' on the fob is the tailgate/boot.
  • The microswitch on the drivers door, which detects if the door is open/closed, appears to work.
  • The lock/unlock switch on the door doesn't appear to work... Things 'clunk' sometimes but only faintly.
  • All doors are currently locked using the manual 'emergency' method.
  • Currently opening & locking the drivers door using the key.
Annoyingly, I don't have access to VAG-COM.

Thoughts?

I've done a bit of a trawl with Google but can't find anything useful.

Check the wires where they go into the drivers door, under the rubber boot.

Will do...

I was going to pull the door card off too and have a poke around.

Any other thoughts?

Mk5 is notorious for failing door locks, fortunately there are plenty available online, both new and used, wouldn't waste money on a used one as it too could be on the way out. Dont take the door card off, it wont get you anywhere, the outer skin has to come off to get access to the lock, now it could be the lock retaining collar has come loose, in that case it's a free fix. There are videos, and some good ones on how to remove the lock, just Google mk5 golf door lock removal, it's not a hard job but a bit fiddly.

Yep, I've seen those...
...however!

As all 4x locks give a definite 'clunk' when I use the fob (but not the door switch), I suspect the problems aren't with the locks themselves.

If the loom is ok, it would need a scan really to see where the problem is, where in the country are you? Someone local might have vcds (I'm in West Berkshire)

I used the following guide to fix all the mechanisms on my altea and then on friends golf and octavia. All had the same symptoms of whirring but not unlocking.
Don't use wd40 though , silicon spray much better.

There are youtube guides to removing the golfs panels.

The car is now long gone and we never got around to fixing.

However, IIRC, it's one of the parts inside the door actuator which fails. It's a right PITA to repair and the cost of replacing the units cost as much as the car itself... Hence why we didn't bother.
