Hi All,

I'm considering the mk 1 Tiguan R Line in either TDI or TSI for for my wifes next car, the latter being apparently rare in these cars. I've owned Mk 5 golf GTIs and R32s so know about DSG and haldex oil changes etc but not familliar with the later Mk6 platform TSI engines. My question is do these need the updated cam follower and is this expensive if not been done? And are these chain driven rather than belt? Do they suffer with high oil consumption like the previous EA113 TFSIs used to?

Thanks

Sorry another question, will this car have a 6spd wet dsg box or the 7 spd dry dsg which people are saying is a little unreliable as its sealed for life and doesn't require oil changes?

Hi Si! I don't know for sure, but would be surprised if it wasn't the 6-speed DSG with the later 210hp TSI (not TFSI) lump - which is chain driven.

TSI doesn't have the cam follower like the TFSI, there are potential cam chan issues though.

Hi Ben, thanks, hope you're keeping well! I think its 6spd wet clutch DSG but have asked dealer various questions anyway. Miss the R32s (and one in particular wink ) but hoping a Tiguan 'GTI' R line might be a good compromise for us at the moment.

Thanks, presumably this relates to chain stretch and tensioners? Hopefully pretty easy to hear if its rattling like marbles in a can when warm or check tolerances via VAGcom.

Yeah you can check the stretch via VCDS, also checking the version of the tensioner itself is a 10 minute job

Got the later version of this (ours is a 2014 car) which we've now owned for 6 years and still remains probably the best all around car we ever bought.

Not sure about the previous version, but ours has the 7 speed Dsg wet clutch gearbox,

the car's been pretty much faultless since new,
I still enjoy driving it, and having a softer ride, being more relaxing and very easy to use, find it makes a nice contrast to my 911.
If you do high miles you may find fuel economy an issue, we average around 25 mpg and get upto low 30's on a run.

the earlier versions will have suffered with timing chain issues,
my 2010 scirocco had the same problem and failed requiring a new engine, I think cars made after 2012 had the revised tensioner fitted which fixed the problem and can be retrofitted to older cars, but could cost over £1k depending on who you go to, although probably a lot less through an independant.

They're quite rare with most people opting for diesel, but if you don't cover high miles, imo they are the better choice, I've certainly never regretted buying ours.

Thanks for the input, we ended buying it, very impressed with the way it handles for a small SUV and gearbox is very quick. For 200bhp i was expecting it to feel a little quicker than it is but i guess it has 300kg more than a Golf GTI which is why. I also suspect its not been used much so will establish a strict exercise regime and run through a couple of tanks of super unleaded. I'm going to contact VW to ask about the gearbox, have a feeling its the 7 spd wet clutch as the dry clutch was reserved for lower engined cars due to the torque limit. If it is then i will need to get the oil changed asap as i cant see any record of it being done. Car is on 37k miles. Haldex oil has been done.

I'd then like to get the chains checked on vcds.

congrats, hope you find it as rewarding and faithful as we do ours

If it's 7 speed dsg then it's definitely wet clutch
as you say the dry clutch was only used on smaller engined cars and isn't rated for use with higher torque engines.

Our car had the gearbox oil changed last year on about 40k miles which I believe is the recommended service interval so probably worth you getting it done.

haldex oil has just been done on 48k,

Our car has 210 hp so not sure if it's the same engine,

I know on the Scirocco the engine from the mk5 Golf gti was being used up until late 2009 so probably worth checking,

Also when the timing chain failed on my Scirocco, it was preceded for several months by a rattle every time I turned the engine over which was basically the noise of the chain trying to slip, and was due to the tensioner no longer doing it's job, so probably something to listen out for.
