My current lease car goes back in a few months and I’m starting a search for something used instead. I used to drive a lot of motorway miles and it was pretty crucial that I got to work otherwise I’d lose a days wages, so leasing fitted the bill nicely with new car reliability. This year I’m probably going to be working from home a lot more, and significantly less miles, and as we’ve moved out into the sticks I’m thinking of getting something a bit taller to see over the hedges with.

I’m split at the moment between Q5’s and Touareg’s... Q5 would ideally be the 3.0tdi however budget puts me in a pre facelift around 2011. Touareg’s would be the newer shape model from around 2011 onwards. I’m looking for something that’s well down the depreciation curve that’s hitting the 100k miles.

My head says the Touareg, with a bit more internal space, and a much more modern MMI. I used to have a 2010 A4, and the Q5 looks 95% the same on the inside. Not too concerned about fuel consumption, and I’ll never have to worry about congestion charging out here.

Would love to hear any good reports or horror stories on either vehicle...

Thank you in advance !!

Q5 is a bit bigger than a Tiguan, you’d get a better deal on the q5 as due a refresh. Tourareg is a little dull even in higher spec especially the new shape ones.

In my experience the Q5 is big on the outside not so inside. Passenger space maybe better than my old CRV but boot space feels smaller, less useable. Nice car to be in and drive though.

Found a “nice” 2011Q5 3.0 tdi S line.... and was hoping to take delivery end of this week... but...

I identified to the dealer that it was due a service and also a DSG/S-tronic service. Didn’t notice anything wrong with the gearbox on the test drive, maybe a slight clunk from 1st to 2nd when it was cold...

So they’re getting the S-tronic service done at an Audi dealership, and they identify an issue with the mechatronic unit. The dealer is now getting that replaced at an independent gearbox specialist nearby...

On the initial news I thought I might back out of the deal, but I’m now thinking maybe it’s a good thing, albeit a slight delay while the works getting done..

Anyone else had mechatronic replacement on the 3.0 tdi???

The mechatronic units are a weak point on all the VAG dsg boxes. At least if it's done that's one less thing to worry about.

is the Q5 DSG?

My 2020 40tdi is remarkably slow at pulling out of junctions, makes me think its not dsg

If it's the S Tronic then yes.

This is a 2011 model, so yeh DSG / S-Tronic same thing.... not multichronic thankfully
