Mk7 Golf R strange Clutch rattle.
Discussion
Hi All,
I have a 2015 65 plate Golf R Manual on 67000 miles.
I have only owned the car for 3 months and have just taken out a VW Extended warranty as the Independent Dealer 3 month warranty has now ended.
I’m having a bit of a strange issue with the clutch. It doesn’t slip, biting point is low and feels good to use. However, to start the car you have to depress the clutch to the floor and when the pedal is released into neutral there’s a crashing/banging sound which lasts 2-5 seconds. It almost sounds like two plates rattling together!
The other strange thing is it only really does this when the car is hot/warm from a previous journey, never on a cold start.
Does this sound like a Clutch Release Bearing to you? Or Flywheel? I haven’t contacted my VW dealer yet as they are obviously shut, and I am pretty sure they’ll do everything to avoid paying out!
Car is one previous owner with Full Main Dealer Service History.

This...
Pretty much all modern manuals have a multipart flywheel known as a "dual mass flywheel" or "DMF", they are a wear item and have a tendency to fail.
Is it normal for a DMF to fail on a 4 1/2 year old car? I know the clutches are a weak point on the Golf R’s but never heard of the DMF’s failing. Pretty much all modern manuals have a multipart flywheel known as a "dual mass flywheel" or "DMF", they are a wear item and have a tendency to fail.
My Independent Dealer Warranty expires this week (I have emailed them with no response maybe shut but would hopefully get some goodwill off them considering the car has covered 1500 miles in my ownership) and I also have the VW Extended Warranty which covers the Clutch Assembly and DMF just not the clutch friction plate...

67,000 miles is the answer, the car could have had a very hard life!
