Experiences of the 1.6TDI engine
Discussion
I have an 2017 Octavia with the 1.6.
It’s used as a private hire so does mainly city driving with a few longer runs. No major issues yet other than a oxygen probe that caused poor running and a drop in MPG.
It’s a decent engine I think doesn’t feel underpowered and I’m probably getting 43-45 mpg 55-60 on a run.
The dsg box is a bigger worry!

The car that I'm buying is 14 plate/60,000miles full annual servicing.
I don't mind a one off cost like that if it did happen at 120k...
If you're going to keep it for say the next five years just put £20 way each month in an account you don't use.I don't mind a one off cost like that if it did happen at 120k...
That's just something I used to do with various cars, eases the pain a bit.

Injectors are about £1200 fitted.
But you've a way to go mileage wise, had some done at 123,000 miles.
Sure if you go to a VW dealerBut you've a way to go mileage wise, had some done at 123,000 miles.
It's £150 if you buy them from a breaker.
Honestly some people!
The cars are generally pretty strong, I wouldn't get the "emissions fix" done on the 1.6 if it was me, and also if it was me I would DPF delete and egr remove as well as EGR cooler delete and then it will be really reliable and pokey with a remap.
The weakest part is probably the 5 speed gearboxes they can sometimes break, typical of VAG TDI 5 speed gearboxes but again plenty about cheap on EBay.

It's got a 6spd box. Would it be ok without the EGR/dpf? Something to consider
Keep the egr/dpf, but use the recommended dealer oil (available at only £24/5L itself). I do actually consider dpf/egr as reliable. Earliest dpfs (circ 2008) had a problem, the egr can ask for a clean every few years or maybe not even that.
My 2012 1.6tdi 170k +miles has never 'yet' had an issue and my work is 1.5 miles away from home! Although it gets other local mileage.
They are emissions items hence having a nice car but polluting the roads you travel on is not the way. Some mechanics refuse to even help people who remove their emissions aids. They are easily looked after and cure if there is a problem.
You don't even actually have to know your car is fitted with them. They take of themselves. There is no need to go for long drives or anything like that, the system will handle itself. Keep the car original as possible and avoid unnecessary work like the plague.
If you are changing fuel filter (every 4 years or so iirc) make sure they have ability to run the low pressure pump for 2/3 minutes to bleed the system. Do not allow them to change the fuel filter without this facility to run the pump to prime the system using a diagnostic scanner.
Hope it helps

I've got a Superb with the 1.6 tdi(105?) 6 speed. Around town it will not go below mid 40's mpg. On a motorway run mid 50's easily achievable.
I've put 156K on mine only problem was a coolant leak around 60/70K from oil filter housing. About £300 part I think.
Other than that just servicing. Must say it's a very good car that's cheap to run. £30 tax also.

We had one and it was dog s
t. Had nothing but problems with it and got rid of it after the 4th time it broke down leaving my wife stranded. DPF issues, limp modes, injector failures. Etc etc.
What year was yours and what mileage did you buy on and upto?
Ohh and EGR issues. I had forgotten about that one.

Yes perfectly fine. Honestly have the dpf gutted and welded you can't tell. And emissions for diesel are visual only. A good quality remap is smoke free. The tales of some mechanics not working on cars with no emissions software is BS. Most garages offer remaps now (cheap slave tat but nevertheless). There are thousands of mechanics and they all want work.
It's just something to go wrong so remove it. Its 4 or 5 sensors to not go wrong as well as the dpf itself.
Some people might get uptight about it but then I'm sure they'd love a TVR or some other performance car which emits far more crap out the back :-)

It was a 60 plate. Can’t remember the exact miles but it was bought from a main dealer on maybe 30k miles. Traded in around 100 I think.

I'm 'hoping' it effects earlier engines more ..Ohh and EGR issues. I had forgotten about that one.
