Hi everyone, I'm in the market for a new car and these have recently popped onto my radar. From the videos I've watched of them and some basic research I'm really liking what I see. Anyone owned one and willing to share their experience? Cheers.

Not owned , but had the use of my sisters while I sold it for her , this was a while ago while they were on sale so the car had about 50k miles on it .
What I remember was a pretty quick car in a straight line , surprisingly quick, interior was really well put together and a nice place to sit , gripped ok but was quite floaty if you hit a crest or bump, felt nervous at speed and that passed to me as I never really trusted it enough to really lean on the tyres, my partner loved it though !

Thanks for that, very informative. Over time I'll likely begin upgrading bits, maybe some decent coilovers as they ride a bit high IMO and as you have mentioned they are reported to be a bit floaty. Probably also get hold of some leon cupra R brakes as its commonly mentioned that they are under braked. Quite likely an exhaust If I can find something tasteful yet enhancing and of course some additional power wouldn't go amiss...

Good car, as long as you don't need too much luggage space.
Great looker, really got better with age.
Can be a bit thirsty. Depends what you're used to.
I'll prob be selling mine at some point soon.

I'm single with no kids so luggage isnt a concern. I agree, never used to think much of these when they were younger and kind of dismissed them which is why I hadn't been considering one despite looking at basically everything else with 4 wheels. Just recently they have grown on me alot. In amongst all of the new angry looking 1.0 hatchbacks these are refreshingly different. I've come from a tuned 172 and also tuned r26 so I'm used to fuel in the low 20's ( and alot less if I'm being a yob biggrin ) so not concerned about it being a bit juicy. I think these are a real modern classic and over time will be greatly appreciated.

We loved ours. Re the comment about luggage above, we managed multiple two week holidays, and 'er indoors doesn't travel light.

We had the usual failures, ARB, dash binnacle, leaky power steering, new screen wash bottle.

Other mentioned MPG. Drive about 68 mph and you can get 34mpg easily. Drive at 85 mph (in Germany say) and mpg drops to 26.

Nice car, thanks for the advice. Uprated ARB's will also likely end up being done. I guess the question is convertible or coupe? Any opinions? Coupe looks better IMO and id imagine it's a better driving car, stiffer I'd assume. Top down motoring is awesome but I found with my mx5 the novelty wore off and ended up very rarely dropping the top. Not to mention it is something else to maintain, also soft tops are a magnet for vandalism IMO

Personal preference ain't it? I'm a through & through roof down guy. Yes, there is more scuttle shake than in my TVR. I agree the coupe looks prettier too thumbup

But, as you can see I'm going round the hairpin at Monaco...roof down in the South of France, what can be better?!

I completely agree, top down is un beatable in the right scenario, reasonable weather and ideally some good roads. I was one of the guys who had the top down everywhere to begin with, 3am at minus -5° quite literally. Experience was soured for me, had to replace the entire roof as I tried to fold the top down forgetting I had my snooker cue case in the car. Straight through the rear window. Second roof was damaged by vandalism and the tear spread.

Back to the imminent TT, as sods law dictates ive fallen in love with goodwood green. Seems very rare. Few for sale at the moment though but unfortunately either a long way away, mileage to high, price to high or needing more work than I want to take on at the moment. Guess patience is the name of the game for this one.

Coming from a 172 / r26 i think you'll be underwhelmed by the handling , do try one before you buy .

Interesting, thank you. I'll try and get a go in one.

My r26 was ok as it was standard height on standard refreshed suspension so not too extreme. Clio was on eibach springs, uprated suspension stuff, stiff ARB, hard engine mounts etc and stripped so very light. Far from standard so quite a raw car which was great, sometimes. I kind of want something a bit more refined and grown up while still being quick and fun.

Yeah , i've also considered getting a tt and had loads of clios but everytime i read the owners cars on here they pretty much all say it's stable and neutral with not much feel .

Like you i've also bounced from clios to 'grown up' cars ie saab 9-5 aero , bmw 325 but they never stay long .
