Hi everyone, I've been speaking with a chap with the intention of going to see his TT and maybe buy it. It was in the garage getting fresh MOT and it now has an issue where the ABS warning light is on the dash. Garage apparently couldnt find the fault and also apparently not very interested. The light displaying is apparently an MOT failure and it only has a valid MOT until start of next month so far from ideal. I'm still going to go and view the car and I'm taking a friend with diagnostics and we are both pretty handy with cars so we will do some investigating. Anyone know any common ABS related faults on this car? Thanks.

Probably knows exactly what’s wrong with it that’s why it’s for sale.
The abs modules/pumps are Known failures and expensive to fix.

Cheers, yes I'm similarly suspicious of it. I've heard about the ABS pump failing and also heard it's a right bd. If I cant find the fault hes going to be keeping the car.

Common with everything on Golf 4 platform:

Allow 250 for refurb and 1.5 hrs labour to remove/reinstall.

...unless it's something like a wheel speed sensor when fault code will point you straight to it.

Thank you. Spoke to the bloke today and it was a kaput ABS pump, as I and plenty others predicted. New one has been fitted but needs coding to the car with VAG com. I'm going to see the car this evening so I will know more later on.

I think youre looking at over £1k for an ABS pump/unit, make sure he either fixes it himself or you knock that off of the price, to get it fixed.

Sensors can be another issue but a much easier and cheaper fix, either new sensor required, sensor not in correct proximity to reluctance wheel, sensor connecting plug not connected correctly, sensor cable problem, sensor plug spades corroded (clean them).

Make sure the ABS light has not been removed from the dash, as some peope do, when you turn on ignition check that the ABS light comes on, a sure fact that the light has been removed is that it does not come on at start up, as it should.

Good advice, thank you. I've agreed in principle to buy the car as it's in lovely condition, recent clutch change and Cambelt 20k ago. On the conditions that it has 12 months MOT put on it and he has the ABS pump coded to the car. Haggled down a bit to a decent price so all in all I'm happy. I'll check to see that the ABS light comes on the dash on start up when I go to collect.

I would have thought the abs warning lamp on this would be led and part of the circuit board so can't be removed?
