Hey guys, weighing up some options for my next car, and i quite fancy a s6 or s7. V8 of course. Currently have a 2018 mustang v8 as my daily.

Looking to hear from anyone who has maybe run one of the above say 2014-2016 age range 10k ish a year.

Any big bills? Hows reliability been? Just general experiences.

Cheers
Chris

I ran an S7 for 2 years, putting 30,000 miles a year onto it.

It was immense fun, great car. However, even with much of that mileage being motorway, it averaged 22 mpg. 32 mpg was on an empty motorway, ticking on at 75mph, but in general 18 around town and 28 on a run.

Servicing was not too scary but brakes are pricey - discs and pads front at £1,200, rears £600 at a main dealer. Indies not much cheaper.

I would get another. Not the one I sold - I checked it on the MoT website out of interest and the mileage has been clocked.

Cool, mpg kinda what i expected, in line with what i get now, actually bit better.

I can do a fair bit mechanically which helps,

We have a 520d also, so i wanna replace 2 with 1. Ideally something awd. The s8 doesnt seem to be much more exp, but i guess will have an added layer of complexity

I also had an S7 for a couple of years. Totally reliable, had an insane spec, B&O, night vision etc etc, I still miss the spec of that car.

If you’re looking for a raw V8 sound you’ll need an exhaust on it though, the factory one is more refined.

I had mine MRC remapped to I think 525bhp, can’t remember the torque number but it had great torque. My friend has a stock RS7 and they were pretty much identical in terms of straight line performance. There are a few very expensive factors that make them expensive to tune any further though so I went the RS7 route.

Great car though and utterly reliable in my ownership experience.

Go for it - it really is a stunning car and very much a Q car as it's quite subtle. I suspect the S8 will be a wallet burner.

You should be able to do front brakes, rears will need Vagcom to sort out the handbrake.

The engine will take a decent map as above - it is quite unstressed in normal spec, the gearbox will be your limiting factor - the RS uses a different set up to deal with the torque.

I looked at various before I bought it - M5, XFR, Lexus etc but the S7 just seemed rare and left field. It also got me through a snowy rural winter, not something I would have enjoyed in an XFR.

I've currently been running a 2017 S6 Avant for the last 12 months, which was upgraded from an A6 BiTDI Avant which i ran for 5 years pretty much fault free, so the platform its self is a good one.
Great car, fuel is around what others have said, so far no big bills but I've got 2 years extend warranty left.
Performance wise its 80% RS which is still bloody fast but not quite timewarp,

In comfort/eco mode it will do the potter around with the minimal of fuss and very quiet on the motorway (Adaptive cruise a must!) but in Dynamic / manual it tightens up and is a hoot on a charge for a 2T estate.

Just had an oil change service at Audi (Price match against local Indy) and MOT an no extras needed there.
One thing to watch is the gearbox service the s-tronics need one every 40K miles and can be pricey when they go boom but plenty of specialists around.

There aren't many around and took me about 12 month before almost the right spec one came up (Black edition / LED matrix / Pan Roof / Tech pack advanced)
As its been said the V8 is a little muted so needs a front resonator / suitcase delete to open it up a little, but with a young family its ok for the moment
It doesn't stand out as much as the RS but it does still get positive attention from people who like cars, apart from one neighbor who asked if it was the diesel S6 laugh

I picked up our new (to us) 2018 S6 Avant yesterday. Same spec as yours Icehanger. It will be getting put through it's paces over the next few weeks with a road trip.

They seem to be flying off the shelves quickly, the good ones anyway, as last of the petrol V8's.

Get a good one and enjoy!

Level of complexity on the S7 and S8 is really not that different - the architecture is pretty common to those models in terms of modules and systems they control. S6 maybe a little simpler, but all are pretty robust electronically so I'd opt for whichever suits your needs best in terms of number of seats and balance of interior and boot space.

As a long term v6t owner (S5) the V8 is actually slightly better on a run, due to cylinder shutdown, than the smaller engine in mine.
