Hello PH,

I took my car to a VW dealer today (still under a used car warranty) to have a rattle from the motor looked into. It’s best described as sounding a bit like a bicycle freewheeling when the engine is not under any load (foot fully off the accelerator and the revs dropping) and can only be heard from inside the car with the windows down.

When demonstrating this to the technician, he immediately said that it was very common (they all do that) and the sound was coming from a spring in the wastegate and it was nothing to worry about.

I am not trying to second guess the technician, I realise he is much better placed to diagnose and advise then “the internet” but I was wondering if any other owners had experienced this? And if they managed to find a fix for it?

Cheers!
Jimmy

The wastegate rattle only happens when the turbo boots in and it sounds like a bean tin full of nails bouncing around when the turbo comes on 2.5-3k whatever it is, in the car you can hear a rattle behind the dash were the turbo is but window down the metal noise is reverbing to the exhaust. I had that in my MK2 Leon FR with the same engine as the MK6 GTI.

I suppose its worth a try but I can't see how its that if it happens under no load.

A picture and parts number is in there: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

VW/Seat UK don't recognise the rattle as a fault, VW USA released a part that we can get hold of though.

Timing chain tensioner is a problem on that engine as well before a certain date, that would be making noise idle and is bad news if it is that.

Theres a link in there somewhere to find out what year the car came with the updated tensioner, its around mid 2012 and onwards your safe.
