Hi Everyone,
I’ve just picked up an approved used 2014 S3 Sportback S Tronic on 59k. So far I am really happy with it coming from a Manual Mk7 Golf R. The S Tronic is much better suited.

I’ve been driving ZF BMW’s for the last 3 years and I am finding myself much preferring the DSG. Shifts are so much faster and smoother.

Checking the service history (all online) the DSG oil change was done a 44000 miles which seems to be 4000 miles too late? The gearbox whines slightly in first gear between 1000-2500rpm but a lot of people online say this is just a feature of the DSG? Anyone else find this? Car has a 2 Year Audi Warranty anyways but just want to know for peace of mind.

Planning on taking it up to Snetterton and Cadwell Park in September!

I’m a little bit fussy but if it were me I’d get it done again for peace of mind, especially if your tracking it.
It will benefit you in the long term and they are fussy about their oil changes.

Thanks, as it’s a 2 year warranty I’m going to see how it goes and mention it at the next service due in a year.

Sounds normal.

I was going to say you have nothing to worry about if you have a 2 year Audi warranty, but if you're going to track it they will probably invalidate it if they find out.

Mine is also a 2014 but never had any gearbox whine, but it's only done about 28K miles. I think I'd get it checked sooner rather than later if it was me.

I'd always prefer to see s-tronic oil changed 4k too early, rather than 4k too late. Smacks of laziness by previous owner (although dealers are pretty rubbish at telling customers it will need doing before the next service is due!)

Any damage done will already be there - low gear wine suggests it's probably had some hard launches. You can check with VCDS whether launch control has been used, and if so how often.

It may not get worse in terms of noisiness - if it does then getting it dealt with during the warranty will be the way to go, assuming the dealer doesn't pull the 'they're all like that, sir' line.

When you say whine in first gear, do you mean when you are in sport or manual driving it into the red line?

I've not noticed it in my MK3 Cupra but my MK2 FR did it and if you google it, its common and majority of people have been told by techs its just normal.

Driving in D it shouldn't make any noise because it jumps to 2nd instantly anyway.

You've got 2 years for it to explode and be covered anyway.

Would it still be covered if the DSG oil change was done 4000 miles too late though? Surely that would be a get-out.

He's bought it off Audi with a 2 year audi approved warranty so I'm presuming the Audi dealer took it in as a P/X and did the service, he's fully covered for anything apart from wear and tear for 2 years.

The gearbox being overdue an oil change isn't going to cause issues though, I bet the majority of dual clutch gearbox's on the road weren't serviced on time.

I got my Cupra from a BMW/Mini dealership who took it in as a P/X, when I went to look at it I noticed it was overdue a DSG change and they got the BMW techy to do it before I bought it.

Virtually nobody has "additional work" done outside of the service unless there's a specific fault that needs addressing. If a car has done 39k miles and isn't due a service for 5k then people will get the extras done along with the service. I wouldn't call it laziness, it's just how the world is.

When buying I'm generally fine with +/- 5k on the Stronic, the S3 box isn't known for giving grief.

Missed haldex oil more annoying as the pumps like to s**t themselves at the best of times.

Just me then that takes stuff in as it needs doing, if not early lol - maybe 'laziness' was too strong a term....

Waiting for the S5 to come back from its 2nd thermostat replacement in 9 years....the s/c oil is being changed and injectors serviced while it's in bits (and new PCV valve to reduce oil consumption) - at least there's no cambelt to worry about :/

I;d be more worried about brakes getting warm at Snetterton than the gearbox.
Would be prudent to get some decent fluid in there and pads I;d suggest.

Hi All, sorry for the delayed response!
You only really hear the 1st gear whine in S Mode or holding it in 1st whilst in Manual. Reading articles online it seems to be normal.

Really enjoying the S Tronic now I’ve had a chance to get used to it. Do miss my manual Golf R but find it much more engaging than the ZF.

In regards to the brakes, I managed to get them smoking after a hard drive on Monday.... I’ve ordered the RS3 Brake Ducts but don’t really want to change the pads as Audi replaced the discs and pads before I picked it up with OE Audi stuff.

Having a strange issue.... I was sat in the car with it idling today for about an hour and a half for the AC. The oil temp was sat at around 115 degrees.

When I pulled away, the car felt really sluggish. As though the first 3/4 of the accelerator pedal wasn’t doing anything. Once full throttle was applied it would take off as usual.

There’s a loud whining/humming sound at around 2000-2500 no matter what gear I’m in.

No Engine lights. Just filled up with a tank of V Power?

Had you changed the car settings while sat there? On the Cupra there is a very noticeable dead spot on the accelerator when setting off, having it in the other higher throttle response settings makes it feel a bit better but its still there.

At that RPM its probably something to do with the turbo or just the noise of the turbo.

Probably heat soak in these temps. Will be knocking ignition timing back to protect the engine. Does the car have mods, or standard?

Tried it in all modes. Just seemed very lethargic! Let it cool down and took it out later and it felt fine... must’ve just got too hot I guess.

Car went into Limp mode yesterday, with an orange check engine light. Audi are picking the car up today.

D'oh! Not ideal

Looking at those faults, replacing the cam position sensor should result in the rest just clearing - they're all logged 'downstream' faults because the sensor isn't giving the information they need to operate normally.
