Golf R or Audi S3
Discussion
Hey guys,
An age old question no doubt! My heart is saying to go for an S3 8V fast back (if I can find one with the right spec) however my head says a Mk7.5 R Estate is the better family wagon (especially with two young kids the equipment as standard seems much better (virtual cockpit etc). The big down side is it looks a bit meh.
Has anyone owned both? What were your thoughts?

They drive the same, basically.
Audi interior is nicer, VW tech is better.
Golf R estate in theory an excellent compromise but as you say, they look 'OK' compared to the hatch and are very difficutl to find with any decent level of specification. It seems almost every single one sold is ex-lease without a single option. A lot serviced/maintained on the cheap (if at all) as a result. Facelift cars do get reasonable standard equipment mind you.
It's the 'R' seats that bug me, they're so damn boring looking and can make the interior feel decidedly pedestrian. GTI interior far more interesting.

i've had both, back to back on lease, two years a peice. (64 plate R (mk7) and a 66 plate S3)
my opinion.
They are not the same car.
The Golf is more fun, more cheeky, more plucky, more chuckable, more nimble.
The Audi is grown up, solid, fast vanilla. Feels more premium but yet somehow not.
Audi leather is standard but absolutely pointless. it's plastic, and hard plastic at that. i would prefer the fabric basic seats in the Golf.
up until the facelift mk7.5 golf i would have said the Golf but with the audi interior - now, if i had the same choice it would be golf with Golf interior. - it really is a cake and eat it car.

This.I've been looking on and off for a while (since before corona started) and it's very rare to find an R estate with any sort of decent spec level and which isn't one of the basic no cost option colours.
