How do others rate this 105 bhp engine, i've had a couple now, both fully serviced on longlife spec and both have headed towards the 150k mark with absolutely zero issues. One in a 13 reg Toledo and the current one in a 14 reg LEON. I'm returning mid 60's mpg on a run and a solid 60 on my rural roads. Love the tourque characteristics allowing the little unit to pull nicely from 30 to 80 in 3rd and 4th gears on my private road. Doesn't even sound that much like an oil burner from inside. I await alternative comments !!

I have it in an Audi A3. I drive a daily mix of out of town, motorway and city five days per week. Get 55mpg on the way in (although it’s easy enough to get 60mpg). I get 45mpg on the way back as a lot of it’s oddly uphill and there’s more congestion. Best I ever got was 70mpg on a town / motorway run. Torquey engine, that is an ideal all rounder. No problems so far although I got the timing belt done before the recommended time. 94k so far.

Thanks, I wondered how it faired in the larger car, Passat, and that sounds reasonable too.

Torque ..... have you ever driven anything faster. They are as flat as anything.

I had it in a mk6 Golf and was getting 63+ mpg on my very long commutes. Engine seemed well suited to the size / weight of the car, if not bursting with power.

I had the same engine in a 2016 mk8 Passat albeit in 110BHP guise.

Went well enough but economy suffered. I think i recall getting high forties / early fifties.

A tuning box works well on them.

I think in a Passat the 2.0TDI is probably better suited.

Yes even a tuning box would sort it out, but if its post warranty anyway then i'd probably go for a remap full stop.

It is a tax break special for company car drivers.

Drove one in a Passat, no torque and horrible economy.

Far better real world MPG out of the 2.0 (have had 3 in the last 3 cars).

Note the 105 HP diesel in the new Octavia is a de-tuned 2.0, the 1.6 is dead and deserves to be.

Had it in a mk2 leon, found it very flat and really had to be worked. It always did long runs and was always serviced at seat but was getting progressively more rattley as it got to 80k and wasn’t getting much past 45mpg. In comparison My GTD got better mpg, often getting high 50’s with a lot more power and torque.

For perspective gave a 2.0 diesel superb back to VWFS in April - Average mpg over 66k brim to brim 58.8 mpg.

Passat 2.0 diesel 2012 version best on the trip was 84 mpg Solihull to Stafford M6 rush hour.

More than driver in the car and the weight kills the 1.6!

Why chip the weak engine - get the better one, the 2.0

The 1.6TDI isnt weak. Its just that 110BHP doesnt pull the weight of the Passat exceptionally well under load. Its fine in the car, just not the optimum engine / car combination.

A £300 remap on a 1.6TDI can give the you power of a +£2,000 more 2.0TDI. This works particularly well in the Golf, Leon etc where the 1.6TDI is more prevalent.
