Golf MK4 boot light

Hi there,
I have a 2003 Golf MK4 estate with a boot light that never worked. I have replaced the boot lock/microswitch to no avail. I have stripped the car completely and tested all cables through the flexie to the roof lining and down the sides and they're all showing no sign of breakage. solid connection and the wiring loom seems perfect between the boot lid and the interior of the car.
Here's the strangest thing. Tested the voltage for the side boot light (next to cigarette lighter socket) and the roof lining boot light and they both show continuous live (+) on both wires whether I lock the car with remote or not, or whether I close the boot or not. The wires going into the boot light should be (+) and (-) in order for the light to function. Not in my case. They're both showing (+) permanent feed.
Any ideas are very welcome.
