Hi guys, I have an Audi A5 2.0T fsi quattro (B8). The car is a 58 plate and is the 208bhp edition.

I've contacted Revo/Apr/R-Tech/VRS and AMD in essex.

Settled for AMD since heard good things about them and they're cheaper and got availability in a couple of weeks - compared to R-Tech where only nov is free for example.

Out of the places I contacted, R-Tech who are well renowned recommend to do a few things before stage 1 remap:

Diverter valve, Cam follower, PCV system.

Only R-Tech recommended this. The question I have is - is it worth doing these?

Has anyone had a stage 1 remap on their A5 and done any of these things?

I will ofc change oil to 5w40 and only use 98 octane or 99 when filling up. Planning on getting a panel air filter too.

Can anyone share their experiences with getting a stage 1 remap?

Sounds like they are suggesting you change some the more common failures of these engines...maybe just for a reliability point of view.

Not sure about diverter valve, but the cam follower needs checking and replacing as needed - a know weakness, as is the PCV system.
No need to change to a 5W40 if you are already using 5W30, the 5w30 has to be close to the upper limit of viscosity to meet wear tests and conversely a 5w40 has to be close to the lower limit to meet the economy tests to meet VAG oil requirements - you won't be able to tell the difference. Making sure the oil meets the correct VAG spec is significantly important.
Panel filters do not gain anything, there's a dyno run on youtube somewhere where even with the filter removed no gain over a paper filter. Avoid cotton filters as they filter worse than paper/foam.

There's plenty of info on Audi/VAG forums about tuning these engines.

Yes change the DV along with the PCV and definitely the tappet. Only use VW/Audi items.

There have been a number of DV revisions since 2008. Unless you know the last time it was changed, you are going to be asking an older part to hold more boost that it ever has. Consider it preventative maintenance.

When I changed mine on my similar age S3 it was ripped.

I would seriously also consider dropping the sump and at least removing and cleaning the oil pick up. Then a general service. Oil. Filters. Coolant.

Do you know the last time the plugs and coils were changed? Changing them to NGK from Opie made a noticeable difference on mine.

These are all things you need to consider. Get it running better than it ever has before you tune it.

Thanks guys. So I've contacted a few places for a quote to change cam follower, pcv and diverter valve. Amd, vrs and my local revo dealer are all quoting over 300 including labour. Weirdly enough r-tech are only quoting 190.

Since r-tech only have remapping slots available for dec, I am going to get my car remapped by amd on sept 1st and get those mods done by r tech soon.

AKS tuning online for the parts. Honestly they are all easy enough to change.

Personally I would wait for R-Tech. They are the experts who will custom tune to the car, to your requirements, and your driving style. Not a generic map. Is that what AMD are offering? Will they do a full drive and rolling road diagnostic, check for boost leaks?

For the TFSI it’s a no brainier.

And just reading the thread title again. Should I get these mods? These are not mods. They are preventative maintenance.

Have the coils and plugs ever been done?

Is it DSG/auto?

Sorry, not sure if these ever came with manual. If manual, I’d be worrying about the clutch.

Had an A4 with the same engine, had a stage 1 super chips map. Did not need any hardware change. Ran with no problems for the 2 years I owned it for..

Thanks for the recommendation for parts. Yeah R-Tech do sound like the best option but I cannot wait till dec for it! They're dyno is also for 2WD only so wouldn't work for my quattro. AMD are offering dyno and the things you mentioned, well pretty sure they are.

Yeah mods isn't the right word for this work true.
Coils and plugs were changed 18k miles ago so they'll need changing within next year or so anyway.

I was thinking of getting NGK iridiums spark plugs and R8 coil packs?

It's manual. Clutch has never been replaced so I doubt it will last very long after the remap.

From what I’ve read the R8 coil packs offer no performance advantage over the standard items but are cheaper.
I have a stage 1 r-tech on my Edition 30 and it’s great, still on the original clutch at the moment!

And that’s just it. R-Tech will map it to how you want it. Don’t go for pub figures. Go for drivability.

Should be fine for those plugs and coils if only done 18k ago. I did mine as all 4 coils were different brands. With one being original! It’s the platinum plugs you want. I went for the R8 coils in the end as they were cheaper. £95 four NGK platinum plugs, four NGK coils. Remember you may have to go a step cooler on the plugs if mapping.

But in all seriousness. Drop the sump and clean the pick up pipe. It will have gunk and dipstick tube in it!

You’ll love it once it’s done though. You’ll wonder why you waited so long.

Do these have a pre-cat in the downpipe like the Golfs have? If so it’s well worth removing it. It will still pass it’s MOT/emissions. But will spool that little quicker.

What's the oil consumption like at present? These engines have a reputation for burning ridiculous amounts of oil due to ring wear, and many were rebuilt under warranty with new pistons and rings.

Dealers often replaced the PCV system to try to "fix" the oil consumption, but IIRC that usually had no effect.

I wasn't aware diverter valves were an issue on the B8...?

They aren’t an issue per say. They are just 10 years old. At that age this simple device may leak the increase boost of boost you’ve paid for. It’s just a good bit of preventative maintenance.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not an expert with cars so trying to decipher what you mean!

When you say clean the pick up pipe is that the same as having an oil change and changing oil filter? Because I got that done a couple weeks ago.

Also for the diverter valve I called up R-Tech and they recommended revision G rather than revision D. I'm guessing they're the experts so will get that done - apparently revision g is cheaper too.

Hi you are correct about the oil consumption issue. My car was taken back to audi to fix the issue years ago so that's not a problem

You need to Google it. 1.8T or TFSI oil pick up pipe blocked/gunged up. As yours has had work in the past you *may be ok. But I’d want to see that the pick up pipe was checked on the engine rebuild. If not. Get it checked. It’s proven that these generation of engine have their issues. Don’t start on the tensioners!
