GTI mk5 or GT 2.0 TDI mk5 or Leon FR TDI CR or VRS TDI CR
Discussion
Greetings
I appreciate this type of post will have been done before. Just looking for some advice on buying a new car.
As the title suggests I’m torn between a 2.0 TFSI and the 2.0 TDI cars. Looking at the bottom end of the market with a £3K-£4K budget.
Currently drive a 1.9 TDI mk5 Golf got her mapped but want a bit more power.
I do average mileage about 12k per year. I know I probably don’t need a diesel but a like the low down torque and mpg. Do mainly A and B road driving at the moment.
I like the idea of owning a mk5 GTI as an all rounder. I was thinking as well in terms as depreciation the GTI will hold its value better than the others. Another thing to consider is how bad are diesels going to be taxed etc in the future. I know it will also happen to petrols. Plus it’s not a diesel so no DPF, EGR etc etc to go wrong.
If I get one of the diesel cars I’d have to get it remapped, remove the DPF and get the EGR valve sorted. Where as with the GTI I’d just get it remapped. So it would cost me more to mod the diesel.
In terms of reliability which would be more reliable? I’ve had diesels the last few years and some where good others where horror stories.
I did some yearly cost estimates and a GTI would cost me a few hundred more a year than a 2.0 TDI. But I still think a GTI would be a better car to park my money in than a GT, VRS, or FR diesel. The GTI has that it factor I suppose the VRS and FR do you an extent. The increased costs are mainly fuel and tax as insurance is actually cheaper for the GTI for some reason which is interesting.
Thanks for taking the time to read my post and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Diesel vs Petrol is dependant on circumstances. If you do alot of miles its going to be a diesel.
To be honest I wouldn't worry about depreciation, I would say the car brands you are looking at in that price range really you are looking at end of life cars, just get one and use it.
VAG cars for reliability usually is good, just make sure you research the car you go to see, any known issues have been corrected and its maintenance has been done on time.
