I’ve sold my car and am looking to return to the Audi fold. Previously I’ve had 2 V10 S6 and a 3.0 TFSI D4 A8.

Currently looking at either a D5 A8 or D4 S8. There’s about a £10k difference between the two. Budget for the S8 should be around £25k for a private sale.

Regards the A8, there seem to be quite a few approved used ones that are two years old with very low mileage at around 10,000 miles or less. These are around £35k which seems to be a saving of over 50% from new.

Pros of the S8 would be the twin turbo 4.0 engine which makes around 520bhp and can easily be remapped to circa 700bhp. Cons would be I’ve already had a D4 before and it won’t be the current model.

Pros of the A8 are it’s the current model, will have two years warranty and recovery. Sold by a main dealer so hopefully less hassle. It’s the current model still with all the new tech. The 3.0 supercharged engine is a known quantity to me and can also be remapped to circa 450bhp. Cons would be the extra price and the extra depreciation.

Anyone have any advise or experience of either car?

They’re both petrol!

D4 and D5 is just to differentiate between the model years.

Sorry my mistake, my choice would be the S8 all day long IMHO, I know it's not the latest model but if it was me I would regret, (and I suspect you might as well) not going for the V8.

Yes I’m currently in the same frame of mind. If I spent around £3k on top of the purchase price of the S8, it would be one seriously fast car.

I know the current A8 only from sitting in a couple on a visit to the local dealer but I've had a drive of the S8 in late 2015 as a friend had leased one. It was brilliant. The new models, especially on the inside with all the screens, don't do it for me. I'd go for the S8... what's around 30k miles on these cars... nothing at all!

I woudn't worry if it's current model or not. It's what you prefer. Do you like interior of D5? Do you want to have particular options in the car which might be relevant to model and year?

Unfortunately for you, used S8 prices went up recently. You could get 65 plate for £25K, now sellers want more. Also, most S8s from this period are ex-lease cars with base spec. But you still get nice Alcantara interior, leather on doors, etc. Not to mention ANC which should make it quieter than standard A8.

I missed a black 2015 facelifted S8 down in London three weeks ago. I think it had done 40k miles and the guy was asking £19k for it.

You’re right, all facelifted versions are circa £30k from dealers. Pre facelift are cheaper but they’re not as attractive in my eyes. The later matrix headlights and chrome strip along the boot do it for me.

If you can wait, just see what's coming on the market. About a month ago there was very well specced S8, with bells and whistles and it sold almost immediately. Maybe that's the same you saw, it was around £25K. Now cheapest 15/65regs are £29K.

You won't have any warranty if they find out you've remapped it.

That’s what I’m planning to do. I’ve sold my old car and I’m just using a runaround Mondeo that my parents have given me for free.
