Mk4 golf top suspension mounts
Discussion
Hi all,
I don't know who's clever idea it was to put a hex in the middle of a 21mm nut but it's giving me a headache.
Earlier I used a 21mm socket on the nut with a spanner attached on socket and I bought some longer hex sockets (draper) to fit in the hex. The hex socket only went and snapped inside so I'm not a happy bunny.
I can't seem to get the broken part of the hex out and I'm not sure if anyone can advise me on how to get the mount off now?
I was thinking an impact wrench but i don't own one or try and cut the metal mount off? They've been sold to a guy as I'm breaking the car.
Thanks, Dave.

Can you get a set of vice grips onto the shock absorber shaft? You should be able to by moving the dust boot out the way, clamp on and as it turns as you turn the top nut it should jam against the wheel tub to provide resistance. A wee bit of penetrating fluid and some heat should help you. Mind a wee heat dont want shock blowing up in your face!
An impact gun, pneumatic or electric should also be able to get it loose. If you dont have access to one, drive to a friendly garage and ask them to buzz them slack. You can drive home with them finger tight.. (just re-read and you are in process of breaking it so might be doubtful)
Impact (black) hex keys are necessary for this job, like you, i have snapped the silver hex keys in the past
Good luck!

Managed to sort it out in the end I used the vice grips like you mentioned, kept turning the ratchet until the grips got stuck on the inner arch. Came loose like a treat! Such a pain in the backside though, a poor design by VW. Even the rear shocks were annoying to get off cause the top bolts are at an awkward angle.
Thank you for your reply though it's muchly appreciated.
