I know all Audi's do up to 2010 and Octavia's until the change to common rail. I asked an Audi garage and they said not seen any Golf's in for Balance shaft failure or even heard of it. Anyone?

I don’t believe it was fitted to the Golf or cars of that size

Octavias don't have balancer shaft either in the PD engine, only fitted to Audis in longitudinal configuration - the A4/A6 (not A3).

Reason for failure on the Audis is that the oil pump is powered by a hex bar from the slave balance shaft which fails. You can get upgraded bars, also conversion kits to chain drive.

I believe the 2.0 CR has the hex drive issues. I ran a manual GT TDI from 60-110k. A good engine, quick enough and economical. Before that I did 30-70k in a Passat with the same engine. The DSG suited it much better, and it got much better MPG.
