I'm looking to move on from my current car and I'm seriously tempted by the Mk2 3.2 I've had a look through the buying guides but most seem to be getting on a bit, has anyone any advice on what to look out for engine & transmission wise when buying, I currently own 2 Fords, how does the TT fare on corrosion, any other things I should be looking for/wary of?

Thanks in advance

I bought one a month ago and I really enjoy it so far.
Dual clutch gearbox is great, comfortable and pretty decent in corners. Sits very happily at 100-110mph for hours (not in the UK), even frameless windows are not too bad at these speeds.
Rear seats are really for kids or very short rides only but due to hatchback design and folding seats it's actually one of the most convenient coupes for load carrying.
I actually went to buy an electric motorbike in it, 300miles away 😁

Recently posted a few vids on my channel with my mk2 3.2 which I purchased in June. Link in my profile. It includes an exhaust vid as mine came with a Scorpion Red cat back system and it sounds incredible.

Check the battery tray in the boot, they can corrode and rust a bit, seems water can get trapped in there.
Get Bose if you can, we have it in the A4 not the TT and the difference is considerable.
They're thirsty but I re-mapped mine with an APR tune and mpg as well as drivability has improved.
The DSG 3.2 is cheaper car tax than the manual... less CO2 I guess.
Mag ride was optional, mine has it and it does firm things up a bit although the car sits quite high.
Xenons were also optional.

Check the retractable spoiler works, brakes, steering, gearchange etc.

They're a decent motor. Mine is a stop gap car really but it certainly ticks a lot of boxes for the money - again more info in the vids.

Cheers

Not sure if applicable to this model/age TT but they had a big issue with sagging seats in the full leather when I had one.

Yeh, they're ok on my '07 with 85k miles. Same seats as the mk1 R8...

I had an A3 with the same engine/drivetrain, at around 40k miles the timing chain tensioner failed.

Initially Audi wanted £1,600+ to repair as out of warranty and an engine out job. They eventually did it for a much reduced amount but I doubt there'd be that goodwill now, especially if you're not the original purchaser etc. - was fine afterwards but I understand the problem is not uncommon.

Early DSG boxes have a bit of a reputation for problems (and expensive to fix), especially if not serviced properly. Mine was fine at 90K when I got rid but definitely something to consider.

No it's not, just front wings and bonnet.

I went all around mine with magnet. It sticks only to doors and hatch.

Have you tried inner wings, bulkhead, floor pan, boot floor, roof? When producing this model audi wanted to reduce understeer so lightened the front end with aluminium. (wings and bonnet)

Maybe yours is full of isopon.
